About this listen

Blake Taylor isn't the queen of horror, but she's certainly a member of the royal court. Blake has made a career out of writing novels that make her readers want to leave the lights on at night. What Blake's fans and very few people realize is that Blake Taylor is scared of her own shadow and just about everything else. After a family intervention, a case of writer's block, and the desire to be free of the confines of fear, she leaves New York and rents a house in Cypress Glade, Louisiana.

Quinn Scott, a local, is hired by Blake's agent to be a tour guide of sorts for her most famous and troublesome client. The job seems simple for a thousand bucks a month, but as she gets to know Blake, it's anything but easy. Birds, squirrels, broccoli, and dogs are fearsome creatures.

Find a comfortable spot, visit Cypress Glade, and watch as these two women learn to conquer fears that don't always go bump in the night. Be warned, a few feathers may fly....

Contains mature themes.

Romance story with a bit of a twist.

Blake is a famous but recluse author who is scared of her own shadow but writes horror novels. She moves to a small town to battle a case of writers block only to realise that her biggest battle will be with her own inner fears.

Quinn is a small town gal who is the talk of the neighborhood because she is queer. She and her brother run a local plumbing business.

When Quinn’s sister reaches out and asks her to show the famous Blake round town and watch out for her because business is slow, Quinn reluctantly agrees. Their first meeting Quinn decides that Blake is stark raving mad. Although Blake eventually agrees to allow Quinn to show her some of the sights of the town.

A fight with a chicken, learning to drive, a owl sculpture and looking through the lens of others eventually drives Blake to start addressing her fears and brings the realisation to Quinn that she also has some deep ceded fears of her own. What comes next is a story of strengths overcoming fears and bonding that has a lesson to teach everyone involved.

Will Blake ever be able to let go of her demons that have haunted her for so long? What will happen to their bond if she does. You will have to read the story to find out!

What I really love about Robin Alexander’s books is that they have a great way of sliding humour into the story line. They writes their characters in a way that draws the reader into their lives so you feel like you are standing on the sidelines watching the story unfold.

I didn’t reduce my score for this reason but it is notable that I did feel like the story was wound up very quickly. It felt like the last 2 or 3 chapters were quite condensed and it could have been fleshed out over a few more chapters. In saying this I didn’t feel that it warranted deducting stars or from the overall enjoyment of the book. There is definitely room for a prequel or a 2 book to make this a series. There are also the others side characters that could be explored.

In closing, this book will give any reader who enjoys a F/F romance story with a bit of a twist a lot of satisfaction. I take my hat off to to Robin Alexander for yet another great read.

This review is also for the audio version of this book. At over 7 hours of listening has kept me very entertained on my drives to and from work, making my time spent in traffic go vastly quicker and much more enjoyable.

Once again Lori Prince has narrated the book exceptionally giving each of the characters their own personalities and voices. Their natural flowing innotation gives the story life and meaning. Well done Lori and thank you.

Enjoyed!

Had my thoughts and expectations going in and the first few chapters almost made me change my mind about continuing, but an RA book made me continue and I was glad I did. The story and characters unfolded nicely in the facing your fears storyline and developing a romance in the midst of it all. Fully enjoyed!

A funny, witty and engaging story

I really enjoyed the characters and Lori's narration, as usual, with comedy is top notch. Although it was indeed a story tilted towards humor, it also dealt with some serious issues. Do I think the timeline for these things was a little unrealistic, yes, but honestly I didn't mind. I'll for sure be marking this, to play again. A good HEA, with some great chuckles. The chicken scene is legend 🙌🏼 🤣🐔

Hilarious heartfelt and 100% worth it

The voice work of Lori Prince is great and breathes life into the silly cast of characters, and gives them depth and emotion that they deserver. Both Robin Alexander writes relatable characters and blends comedy and seriousness equally. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh and, deals with family and standing up for ones self and being the person that they are meant to be.

Not as funny as usual.

Good writing, of course. And I did laugh. Just not as much as I've come to expect from this duo. Perhaps I've gotten spoiled.

One of my favorites

I wasn’t too sure about this book at first but then I was enthralled. I laughed at so many parts, felt the anger of the characters and could relate in certain situations. I didn’t want it to end. I hope there will be follow ups to their story!!
