About this listen
New from best-selling author Mark Shepard! Written as a companion to the best seller Restoration Agriculture, this book will help farmers capture water in areas they want to and avoid having water flow immediately to the low point. The result? Less water expense, healthier crops and livestock, and less erosion...just to name a few.
What you will listen to in this audiobook is a distillation of more than 25 years of on-the-ground experience working with and modifying the Yeomans Keyline Plan. From the backyard suburbs to 10,000-acre ranches and everywhere in between, from permafrost mountainsides just shy of the Arctic Circle, to equatorial boulder fields of East Africa, areas with 300 inches of rain per year to those with less than three inches, I have personally installed systems based on the Keyline design methodology and its modified forms. What you will listen to in this audiobook is tried and true. It is intended to give a sufficient background to any landowner so they can optimize their water resource for higher site productivity, have greater drought resistance, and just as importantly, to know deep in their heart that they have made even one little piece of earth a little more life-filled, livable, and green.

Story
The restoration agriculture system described in this award-winning book works! It is possible for humans to produce staple foods using perennial agricultural ecosystems that actually improve the quality of the environment. This can be done on a backyard, farm, or ranch scale and is needed right now - on a global scale. Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel, and many other needs.

Permaculture is more than just a way to design gardens; it is a way of life centered around building an ecosystem that thinks and behaves just like nature. Not only does it favor reusing and recycling, but it also limits potential waste, allowing you to design a slice of nature in your own backyard. In fact, permaculture makes nature your partner in going green… And all you need to do in order to get started is open your eyes and observe.

Story
Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Story
Call it "Zen and the Art of Farming" or a "Little Green Book", Masanobu Fukuoka's manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book "is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical."

Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

When we use chemical fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains plants and then become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of toxic substances. Teaming with Microbes offers an alternative to this vicious circle and details how to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web. You’ll discover that healthy soil is teeming with life - not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.

By explaining the lean system for identifying and eliminating waste and introducing efficiency in every aspect of the farm operation, The Lean Farm makes the case that small-scale farming can be an attractive career option for young people who are interested in growing food for their community. Working smarter, not harder, also prevents the kind of burnout that start-up farmers often encounter in the face of long, hard, backbreaking labor. Lean principles grew out of the Japanese automotive industry, but they are now being followed by progressive farms around the world....

Now we risk repeating this ancient story on a global scale due to ongoing soil degradation, a changing climate, and a rising population. But there is reason for hope. David R. Montgomery introduces us to farmers around the world at the heart of a brewing soil health revolution that could bring humanity's ailing soil back to life remarkably fast.

The use of these nontraditional agricultural techniques show how varied operations can give back to the earth rather than degrade it.

A necessary addendum to Yeoman’s “Water for Every Farm”
Excellent book with clear narration and practicable guidance for implementing contour farming and water catchment principles on a farm. Shephard describes what he has learned from 20 years of key line design in the continental US, making key-line principles more accessible and less intimidating along the way. Shepard also offers ways legal advice and terminology to make contour farming follow USDA guidelines and provides links to crucial soil and climate data and other resources.
For the audio version, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of key line design before reading this book. The referenced .pdf’s were not available at the time I bought it but was able to follow most of his guidelines without then regardless due to having read Yeoman’s book once years ago.
I will be recommending this to people often.

Better in Readable Form
Like Restoration Agriculture, this book is pretty awesome for someone looking to work a "larger" piece of property. I do a lot of audiobooks, and books like this, with lots of figures, diagrams, etc. are best visually. some business books I have listened to have websites where you can download for free the accompanying visuals. If that is available for this book, it isn't advertised in the book, but would be nice. That said, great information.

Come on Audible. This is fascinating information that very much needs visual aids to make sense. The text is always referencing figures and diagrams that seem to be unavailable. The narrator mentions how important it is to get the accompanying PDFs, but there is no way to access them. No option from within the app, no option from the website. GIVE ME MY PDFS!! Croikey, bloody good book, mate!
Even before I had heard of Mark, I saw a problem with the official Keyline pattern. It had to be tweaked in all but “ideal” landscapes, which make up an astoundingly rare minority in my part of the world. I thought it would be interesting to try and find a solution to this problem that was widely applicable. Mark delivers that solution here and wraps the whole thing up in a package that is not only effective, but actually comprehensible on the first pass.

Great book not great for audio
Lots of information here, but even though I am familiar with this concept, I found it very hard to follow. Trying to articulate the way water moves over land, without illustration is nearly impossible. If you are designing your own water management system, I would purchase the paper copy to keep as a reference guide.
