Winston Wong!

Wedding Woes by J.J. Chow is such a fun listen with quirky characters. I loved the imagery the author wrote, and found the storyline to be original. I had not guessed who the killer was, so kudos to the author. Noah DeBiase was magical bringing the characters to life with his distinguishable character voices. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. I would definitely listen to more books by this author and narrator.

No Good Deed...

This delightful story charts the efforts of Winston Wong to marry the woman of his dreams while navigating a host of wedding-related crises and trying to discover whether or not a murderer is among his guests. Chow skillfully builds a sympathetic connection between Winston and the reader right in the first chapter of the story when Winston has his reception hall ripped away from him due to an unfortunate double booking. Things quickly go downhill from there. As he scrambles to make other arrangements, his best man loses the rings, decorations are destroyed, and well…lots of challenges confront him. The most significant of these challenges are the large Chan family who stumble upon the rehearsal shortly before their patriarch dies in a bizarre accident. Winston’s kind-hearted fiancé invites the bereaved family (and another suitor) to the rehearsal dinner where events suggest that perhaps the death of Mr. Chan was not as accidental as it first appeared.

The mystery is well-developed, but I must admit it was the personal interactions between Winston and the delightful cast that I most enjoyed in this tale. This book is filled with quirky but thoroughly likable individuals. And the ending has me wondering what new troubles await Winston and his bride.

Lots of Fun

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily leaving this reeviee and all opinions exprrssed herein are my own.

This is the third book in the Winston Wong Cozy Mystery series. It is a standalone story with no cliffhanger ending. I have not read any of the previous books in this series and had no problem understanding the story or the character motivations. There are what I believe to be references to events from prior stories.

Here, Winston is getting ready for his wedding. He thinks he has booked the Winchester Mystery House. (This is a house built by the heir to the Winchester firearm fortune who believed that she was cursed by the victims of her family's firearms. So, she believed she needed to have constant construction on her home to appease the spirits resulting in stairs leading to nowhere and other anomalies.) Winston gets a call to let him know that an intern double booked and because Winston was the later booking, he needed to find another location for his wedding. So Winston turns to his friend who has built a Winchester Mystery Shack on his property. During his rehearsal at the shack, there is a death which appears to be accidental but Winston begins to think this may not be the case after he starts to investigate and on top of this, Winston is trying to get married.

This is a fun cozy with several zany characters. Winston is a likeable character. The mystery was well done with a couple of twists thrown in to keep you guessing.

The narrator did a great job narrating from delivering the comic lines to some of the emotional moments in the story.

Winston Wong, senior detective!

The characters in this book make this listen so enjoyable. The narration is very well done and brings Winston & all the side characters to life. The mystery itself is engaging with enough red herrings to keep it interesting. It’s a short book, perfect for a Saturday afternoon listen! A lovely cozy through & through

A fun, well-written, cozy mystery!

Wedding Woes (Winston Wong Cozy Mystery, Book 3) by J. J. Chow and narrated by Noah DeBiase is a fun, easy-to-listen to Cozy Mystery. Would recommend if you are looking for a cozy mystery, a short listen, or something fun/new. You won’t be disappointed with this one.

What’s it about? Winston is set to get married and runs into a few bumps along the way. Due to problems with the venue, the wedding is set to take place at his friends new “Winchester Mystery Shack”. Problems arise when a death takes place at the rehearsal, leading Winston to play detective. There’s a decent amount of twists and turns, some humor, and the characters are believable and relatable (some are quite colorful in a good way). It doesn’t end in a cliffhanger. I enjoyed how the author brought local area/attractions to the book.

I did not read the first two books in the series and had no problem following along. This book makes me want to listen to the previous ones to see how Winston’s sleuthing began. I listened in one sitting.

The narrator, Noah DeBiase, does a nice job. I would listen to him again.

Overall, I recommend. It is a fun, well-written cozy mystery.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: death, murder, family tensions/problems, old school thinking (boys are worth more than girls).

Winston Wong is back on the case.................

Wedding Woes is the third book in this cozy mystery series featuring Winston Wong, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Winston is a computer programmer whose love of solving mysteries has become a part-time job. In the days leading up to the wedding to his girlfriend Kristy, Winston is suffering continual roadblocks to his well-planned wedding ceremony, the biggest of which is the loss of his wedding venue days before the big day. Although he is able to book his best friend's new business, The Winchester Mystery Shack, as an alternative location, his wedding challenges are far from over. As a matter of fact, this change just brings even more chaos to Winston's life when the large Chan family arrives at the Mystery Shack, not only interrupting the wedding plans but adding a murder investigation to Winston's overfull plate when the member of the family start dying.

I absolutely love Winston Wong and all of his adventures, but I think I enjoyed this one the most. The story of the troubles around Winston's last minute wedding snaffoos as well as the bickering and backstabbing between the Chan family siblings rang so true to real life. The author writes some of these scenes so realistically that I was both laughing out loud and shaking my head in consternation for poor Winston. I hadn't guessed the killer's identity or the reasons behind the crimes before Winston discovers them himself, so I think that is the sign of a great whodunnit. If you enjoy plenty a lighthearted, violence-free, utterly charming cozy mystery, Wedding Woes is the perfect choice.

Noah DeBiase's depiction of Winston is priceless. He has a light, fairly high-pitched tone of voice that perfectly matches Winston's somewhat bumbling, always sincere personality to a tee. DeBiase differentiates well between the male and female characters, and his smooth delivery matches the cozy feeling of the story.

LOVED IT

This is a cute, fun series. Keeps me entertained throughout trying to figure out who the murderer is. This time Winston gets involved with a murder right before his wedding. The narrator Noah Debiase does a fantastic job with each character. I received this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review. I definitely want to do more of this series.
