A lost child.
A marriage shattered beyond repair?
John Baxter doesn't think so, which is why he has planned this weekend getaway with his wife. He expected a lot of shouting, a lot of tears, but in the end, he hoped to have a stronger foundation upon which they could start rebuilding what they had once had.
What he wasn't expecting was the home invasion...and the hell that awaited them beneath the rented cabin.

Nathaniel Scott's voice is phenomenal. I could listen to it all day. Unfortunately the editing did him disservice by cutting pauses that were needed. At times it sounded like the end of a sentence immediately went into the next chapter without a breath. Sometimes a pause is needed, and shouldn't be cut in editing.
Overall, I won't listen to this ever again. I hope Mr. Scott gets a chance to read other books so I can judge him with perhaps a better editor.
Great voice, mediocre editing, meh story

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the back and forth perspective of Then and Now. It was well-balanced and didn’t switch back and forth a confusing amount. The plot twists had me hooked and there were so many emotions that I felt throughout this story that I was grieving one second, panic-stricken the next, and angered the next. Just a really great couples getaway turned extreme horror story.
I WILL however say that I have complicated feelings when it comes to depictions of mental illness in literature and this was one story where I felt like the main character’s mental health struggles were pertinent but didn’t entirely think the antagonist absolutely had to be portrayed as he was for the movement of the plot. Mainly because people that struggle with that specific disorder are often portrayed as the villains in literature and movies and it just hasn’t ever sat well with me. But that’s my own personal opinion.
I’d still recommend this book to others interested in a graphic, anxiety-inducing horror read.
