Publisher's summary

Jim Henderson is one of six guests summoned by the mysterious Edwin Carson, a collector of precious stones, to a weekend party at his country house, Thrackley. The house is gloomy and forbidding, but the party is warm and hospitable except for the presence of Jacobson, the sinister butler. The other guests are wealthy people draped in jewels; Jim cannot imagine why he belongs in such company. After a weekend of adventure with attempted robbery and a vanishing guest, secrets come to light, and Jim unravels a mystery from his past.

A mystery that is fun!

Despite it’s age, this played wonderfully well. There were exciting moments there were romantic moments. They were funny moments. The characters were full and charming. The narrator could not have been better. But it was an adventure and I recommend this book highly.

Nice Cozy Read

I was pleasantly surprised. The book started slow. The story picked up when all the guest arrived at the Mansion. This was my first book by this author. I will look for his other books.

Delightful story

Fun twists, pleasant characters, good plot. This would make a fine ensemble movie. Enjoy the weekend!

A clever and amusing story

I’ve heard this twice and liked it even more the second time. The writing is quite witty. The story holds together. The characters even the villains are like able. Good fun.

Perfect for Your Next Weekend, Wherever You Are

Do you like the Thin Man movies? Did you enjoy Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery? No, this book isn’t exactly like those films. But it does deliver the same delightful mix of mystery, suspense and comedy. Gordon Griffin is, as usual, superb. He understands the spirit of what he’s reading and remains true to it throughout.

Started out ok but dragged on

I wanted to really enjoy this mystery after only recently stumbling on the reprinting of the top 50 mystery classics from the Golden age of mystery writers. I enjoy the recipe of a good Manor House murder mystery and the amateur sleuth. This mystery started out well with the introduction of interesting characters, a sinister butler and a little romance thrown it. But half way thru I got bored and became impatient for things to unravel so I fast forwarded to the end. I don’t usually do that but when I do, as expected it ruins it and I don’t go back and fill in the details. I felt this dragged on before you actually got to any body being uncovered.

Not much mystery to this mystery.

There’s not much of a mystery to solve here. Would be ok as a thriller.
