About this listen

Eleven uncanny stories inspired by the master of uncanny terror, H.P. Lovecraft

One hundred years ago, H.P. Lovecraft created the Necronomicon, a grimoire of lost souls, magical rites and forbidden lore. Now, locked away, the hoarder of horror is after new voices, new blood, to add to his collection.

Listen as he shares the tales that come to him, whispered through the keyhole and written in the dust. From ghost stories to encounters with demons, haunted houses and a fateful Celtic goddess, they will draw you into his claustrophobic and disturbing world, stir your imagination and awaken your deepest fears and nightmares...

Introduced by Stephen Hogan as H.P. Lovecraft, these chilling, intimate dramas feature full casts including Elizabeth Berrington, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Stella Gonet, Derek Riddell, Jamie Glover, Adjoa Andoh, Sara Poyzer and Eddie Marsan.

4 for plays, -1 for insults to H. P.

Oh, I dunno-

maybe I've just been living on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity for too long.
But I suspect the producers decided it was okay to play on Howard's popularity while they shoehorned the abysmal introductory vignettes of a pseudo-H. P. in that apologetic 'we must make this controversial character sound pathetic as we work in an industry that is so repugnantly flaccid and mercenary that we must make him sound like a driveling, paranoid, photophobic wretch. Even though his name has provided work and income for so many people on this production.
Whatever his politics were (and they changed over the course of his life: don't yours?) The moral choice is clear. Give him the respect you afford any other author or cast him into the abyss and lose the revenue.
BBC - tsk. tsk. tsk.
How churlish to use the man like this.

And another thing!

I thought the plays really well written, acted and produced: a shame then to frame such great efforts in this tacky and disingenuous manner.

Now listen to this!

Lovecraft Lite

Misleading promo. If these tales were inspired by Lovecraft, they were from his dustbin. The tales have little plot and meandering narratives. Audio quality is poor: even at highest volume setting, half of dialogue is unclear. Considering this is a BBC production, I expected higher recording quality.
I will ask for refund as soon as I complete this review. I hope no one wastes credit or cash on this dud.
