About this listen
If God is love, then how do we make sense of the evil we see everywhere in the world?
In What If Jesus Was Serious about Justice?, Skye Jethani explores what the Bible really says about God's restorative justice and how he punishes evil and rewards good.
Jethani examines the biblical understanding of justice as the restoration of right relationships both among people and between people and God. He considers themes of judgment and mercy in Jesus's ministry and explains Jesus's warnings about God's final judgment of those opposed to his kingdom of justice.
Listeners will emerge with a better understanding of God's love, wrath, the cross, eternity, and more. In addition, Christians will find new ways to bridge the divide in the church over the importance of personal salvation and communal justice.

Racism is not about hate and ignorance. It's about greed. And it always has been. Black Christian historian Malcolm Foley explores this idea in The Anti-Greed Gospel, showing how the desire for power and money—what some call "racial capitalism"—causes violence and exploitation. Foley reviews the history of racial violence in the United States and connects the killings of modern-day Black Americans to the history of lynching in America.

Second, young people raised in the church are leaving at alarming rates and not returning. Third, loneliness and social isolation are at pandemic levels. What’s the connection? It appears that an entire generation is starving for the very thing the church is called to provide but has chosen to look for it elsewhere. Why is this happening?

Story
As a pastor's wife for 25 years, Beth Allison Barr has lived with assumptions about what she should do and who she should be. In Becoming the Pastor's Wife, Barr draws on that experience and her expertise as a historian to trace the history of the role of the pastor's wife, showing how it both helped and hurt women in conservative Protestant traditions. While they gained an important leadership role, it came at a deep cost: losing independent church leadership opportunities that existed throughout most of church history and strengthening a gender hierarchy that prioritized male careers.

Story
The Bible is the world’s most influential book, but do we really know what it says? Every day across social media and in homes, businesses, and public spaces, people try to cut debate short by claiming that "the Bible says so!" However, they commonly disagree about what it actually does and doesn't say, particularly when it comes to socially significant issues. For instance, does the Bible say we should be on the lookout for an antichrist associated with the number 666? Does it say women shouldn’t wear revealing clothing? Does it say it’s okay to hit your kids?

Can God handle our hardest questions, biggest struggles, and secret doubts? We instinctively assume he cannot. We figure giving voice to those things will bring shame, rejection, and distance from him. But what if our hard questions don't need to function as an off-ramp from Christianity but can lead us closer to his heart? What if he is not afraid of our doubts but instead reveals himself in them? In Can I Say That?, Brenna Blain brings her voice to those who feel unsafe or unwelcome in the church, acknowledging the incongruity between the church's actions and believers' lived experiences.

"In my first seminary class, we were asked to introduce ourselves and say why we enrolled. I'll never forget what one student said: 'My denomination wants me to have an M.Div., but once they see I can grow a big church, I don't think they'll make me finish the program.'" The priorities of this future pastor were startling, but he's not alone in them. In the years since that class, author and minister Skye Jethani has seen more and more pastors swallowed by the celebrity syndrome. Immeasurable will help ministers recognize the forces shaping their view of the calling.

The human imagination is the key battleground in the conflict between the kingdom of God and the consumer culture. Drawing from the vivid imaginations of Impressionist painters, particularly Vincent van Gogh, each chapter of The Divine Commodity uses personal narrative, biblical exposition, and cultural observation to show how consumerism has shaped our faith, and then challenges the listener to use their sanctified imagination to envision an alternative way of expressing the Christian life.

For centuries, many have been taught to believe that the Bible presents a vivid picture of a fiery Hell, where God sadistically torments most of humanity by burning their skin for all eternity. But is this really the picture Scripture paints? Were you raised to view Hell through the lens of the Augustinian-Calvinist tradition, perhaps too intimidated ever to question it? If so, this book is for you. In it, we will challenge the fundamentalist perspective on Hellfire by exploring the original context in which the biblical teachings on Hell were written.

I just finished my second listen through, the first taking a week, the second taking 4 hours straight. I recommend going into this wanting to check everything against what God tells us in Scripture and being willing to throw out anything that doesn't conform this the actual words there. I have a lot to go through.
Again, I would like to see a pdf with the illustrations that go with the chapters as this is a visual guide as an audiobook. There are a few places where the sound goes wonky, chapter 34 in particular. Additionally, you can tell there were a few places where Skye had to go back and rerecord and the inflection and tenor of his voice does not match the sections around it. It's a little distracting but I got through it.
I recommend a listen, then a second one.
