About this listen

In the face of overwhelming obstacles, she’ll need courage, grit, and a tender heart.

Worie Dressar is 17 years old when influenza and typhoid ravage her Appalachian Mountain community in 1877, leaving behind a growing number of orphaned children with no way to care for themselves. Worie’s mother has been secretly feeding several of these little ones on Sourwood Mountain. But when tragedy strikes, Worie is left to figure out why and how she was caring for them.

Plagued with two good-for-nothing brothers - one greedy and the other a drunkard - Worie must fight to save her home and the children now in her begrudging care. Along the way, she discovers the beauty of unconditional love and the power of forgiveness as she cares for all of Momma’s children.

Southern drawl.

Drawn out story line and too much “oh Lord” and “momma always said” repeatedly through the book.

This author is great! I also read Mercy's Rain. Her stories are so DEEP spiritually & emotionally. I love the scripture & biblical teachings mixed perfectly into the stories.

Sweet and simple

This was easy to follow. It warmed my heart and I loved the characters. It was simple book but it was so sweet. And there were great reminders within of Gods love for us.

Lovely story

Such a touching story, so many parts that just bring tears to your eyes. Death, disease, hatred, orphans, hunger, sin that makes our souls suffer due to our own poor choices. I enjoyed the era it was written and the faith and God portion and how the truth will always be revealed. God only can soften and heal our hearts. He brings redemption and draws us near to Him. Loved Eli and Bess and the other characters. This is my first book by this author. I recommend it.

A compelling story.

This is a captivating story, filled with heart wrench and yet survival. A engrossing book without the gratuitous sex scenes, language and violence most authors are compelled to include in their works.
The book does include horrific circumstances, but the author is clever enough to write about those events without having to include graphic details.

Peak into the mountains

This story captured you as you followed the hardships of the people who lived on the mountain. How hard life was yet they took care of each other. Many twists and turns but mostly love and how the children learned what it really was. Well done.
