About this listen

"The Last Exchange is somehow equal parts page-turner, heart-breaker, and hope-dealer. Another brilliantly written novel by Charles Martin." --Annie F. Downs

Gripping suspense meets heartfelt emotion in this standalone novel from New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin. Everyone in her life has only taken from her. So she's not quite sure how to handle it when her new body guard will go to any lengths to protect her and shield her--even from herself. Is this what love actually looks like? For fans of Before We Were Strangers by Renée Carlino and One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

When MacThomas Pockets finished his last tour as part of the Scottish Special Forces, he was hired to consult for a film director to finesse some scenes that weren't working. In a twist he never saw coming, he ended up moving to L.A. to work as the bodyguard for movie star Maybe Joe Sue.

It didn't take long for Pockets to realize there were two Joe Sues: The Joe Sue the public saw with her perfect life and her Hollywood husband. And the private Joe Sue: the one with the traumatic youth that no amount of pills could cover up, who desperately wanted a child of her own.

Even after their paths diverged, he continued to track Joe Sue's life. Only a few would notice when the bottom fell out. But he did. And that's when he stepped in.

In The Last Exchange, you'll find a compelling love story alongside a thought-provoking and soul-searching dilemma as one man seeks to answer the question: How far would you go--really--to save someone you love? What if you'd get nothing in return? In the masterful hands of New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin, finding the answer will take listeners on an intense and heart-wrenching journey to the very end.

I fell in love with Charles Martin when I picked up "The Water Keeper," not having a clue what it was about. The entire trilogy mesmerized me and made me an instant fan. Since then I've indulged in many of his reads. This one is a stand-alone story about Maybe Joe Sue (awesome name) and MacThomas Pockets (strange name, but it works). One is America's sweetheart, the star of the golden screen. The other is an unknown Scot who serves as her bodyguard. Together they blow up social media. More than once.

Charles Martin's talent once again brings his fans vivid characters with all their flaws, warts, and stinky feet. They're an odd blend of genuine and over-the-top that only he could make work. I understand completely how he made me fall in love with Pockets, with his thick brogue, protector's attitude, and impeccable morals. He's easy to love. But how did the author make me love a Hollywood star who has been to rehab 7 times in 5 years and relapsed each time? That's not usually a character I'd be pulling for. Yet the author gave her a personality that attracted me in ways I can't even articulate, and made me want to see her succeed.

If you're the type of reader who can't seem to bend reality for the sake of a good story, you probably won't appreciate the courtroom scene in this book. It's stunning, but implausible, at best. Still, if you can get past that, it's absolutely remarkable. While I enjoyed this novel immensely, I do want to note that readers who have dealt with the trauma of infertility may have a tough time with some of the scenes in this novel. If you're sensitive to this issue, please consider that when making your choice.

With all of that having been said, I highly recommend this novel for its characters, its storyline, and its moving themes.

Another great story. I love his overall theme of life’s difficulties, the messes we get ourselves into, and the redemption that is always possible.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. MacLeod Andrews is an exceptional narrator. But I must say, Joshua Manning's reading parts paled in comparison. I felt compelled to skip listening to his chapters.

Very entertaining, an extremely well narrated (one exception)

Charles Martin is a magnificent story teller & writer. This book touched my heart & soul deeply. I do wish the Governor would have pardoned Pockets, with that being said I believe this ending gives Mr. Martin more room for book number 2 with Pockets & Maybe Jo Sue. At least I’m praying for an additional book to continue with happiness for her/them. Fabulous book and I love the interview at the end. Mr. Martin, I so enjoy your books and the fact that you are a Christian man just feels my soul with added happiness. God Bless you and yours.

I enjoyed the book, but found the courtroom drama extremely bad. No judge, even a fictional one would have allowed all of that messiness.

Good read, bad courtroom scene

Love his writing and this is no exception! Get this!!!!! Pulls you in from the very beginning and doesn’t let you go. Love that it is free of foul language and not smutty.

The time-line jumping around definitely helped with the story and pulling you in. Couple of low hanging fruit things that were obvious but also a couple surprises that were great.

Great book.
