About this listen

An ancient evil has been summoned....

John Decker left Wolf Haven, Louisiana, to escape the memories of his troubled past, believing he would never return. But after 20 years working for a big-city police department, he suddenly finds himself back in Wolf Haven, taking the reins as town sheriff.

Expecting to spend his time dealing with the trivialities of small town life, he instead finds a vicious killer picking off the residents one by one. Scrambling to find answers before anyone else dies, Decker stumbles across an age-old superstition, a terrifying creature conjured from the depths of hell to seek revenge.

If you are a fan of James Rollins, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child, Steve Alten, Graham Masterton, and Michael Crichton, you will love the John Decker series.

Overly dramatic

i hated the narrator's voice. He was overly dramatic and tried way too hard. I see the author uses him for book after book making me hate I like the story so much.

Could have been.....

Not a fan! Story was wordy and the characters were flimsy. I didn't really like anybody in this audiobook except maybe the wolf who, in the end, was not as smart as I first thought. The sheriff was nearly as big a dope as his deputy and none of the females had a lick of sense...except maybe the wolf. Well, at least until she turned stupid too and got herself killed. I will not continue with this series as I can only do stupid for just so long.

Narrator

The story was ok, but the narrator was terrible. Completely detracted from the story. I was hoping the other books would be narrated by someone else, but no such luck. Won’t be purchasing any others in this series.

Danger originates from where you least expect it

Great story, lots of action, twists and turns... The reader was just ok, but still a great book worth downloading!!!

Horrible narrator

The narrator made everything silly. It was extremely difficult to get through the story. The writing was okay... a little simple though.

Not a bad monster story at all

This is the first volume of the John Decker series. A good start here. Not a huge amount of character development just yet, but some seeds are planted.

The protagonist is relatable and likable. Character actions and motivations are pretty good, albeit with a couple small exceptions. The deputy for example is somewhat annoying throughout the book, but his actions at the end were, to me, seemingly out of the blue.

The creature here is announced in the preface by the author and that somewhat lessens the suspense.

The story is mostly logical and reasonable, for a monster story. The very ending, which sets this up as a series, feels a bit forced and wedged in. We will have to see if any of the side characters progress to the subsequent volumes after being told by the protagonist that he would never leave them again. They had little enough to do here, but they could be good characters, given the chance.

My final quible is the performance. One prominent name is Boudreux , which I believe is pronounced boo-dro. The speaker consistently pronounces it as Bor-doe. A small but annoying thing to me Most of the characters sounded fine, but the deputy and a couple female characters sounded way too much like a whiny teenager voice on the Simpsons.

So, in the end, I recommend this book for fans of monster stories. It isn't a great novel but it is a good one and I think I see a lot of potential here.

Decent story

Horrible narrator! I really wanted to enjoy this story, and would have, but the narrator ruined it. I’d advise people to read it and skip the Audible version.
