About this listen

This program features multicast narration.

When Among Crows is swift and striking, drawing from the deep well of Slavic folklore and asking if redemption and atonement can be found in embracing what we most fear.

We bear the sword, and we bear the pain of the sword.

Pain is Dymitr’s calling. His family is one in a long line of hunters who sacrifice their souls to slay monsters. Now, he’s tasked with a deadly mission: find the legendary witch Baba Jaga. To reach her, Dymitr must ally with the ones he’s sworn to kill.

Pain is Ala’s inheritance. A fear-eating zmora with little left to lose, Ala awaits death from the curse she carries. When Dymitr offers her a cure in exchange for her help, she has no choice but to agree.

Together they must fight against time and the wrath of the Chicago underworld. But Dymitr’s secrets—and his true motives—may be the thing that actually destroys them.

"Lovely, lush, and full of otherworldly longing, this modern fairytale about righteousness and the weight we bear for love is Roth at her most imaginative and ethereal."—Olivie Blake, New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six

Intriguing mix of urban fantasy and Slavic folklore

The narrators gave and engaging performance. The mix of folklore, modern culture, and dark humor were enjoyable.

Kind of like a fairytale

This was an interesting story of a few people. Even though the story was short, there was a really nice conclusion.

Fun Novella Focused Around Eastern Folklore

If you’re looking for a fun and interesting fast paced novella with Witcher vibes then look no further than When Among Crows. The three person narration worked wonderfully and while the story is short you get a bit of depth and development to the characters. While I wish it was a bit longer so some story points could be touched on in further detail it is a fun journey! Well worth the listen!

Listening to the book and the characters different accents added so much to the story.

I didn’t dislike anything about this book. Veronica Roth writes a wonderful story, not only of magic and monsters but also of friendship, devotion and forgiveness.

Really liked it except for one thing…

It’s not often that I come across a story that draws inspiration from Slavic/Polish folklore. I really enjoyed the story but there is a defect in the audio recording. A section in the last chapter is missing. The only reason I know it’s missing is because I was reading along with a physical copy of the book. I’m not going put in a spoiler, but the section missing is the climax of the story, so yeah a pretty important part. Unless audible fixes it, I would recommend just reading either the book or a digital copy of it.
