Critic reviews

“Like Georgette Heyer, Harris delves deep into the mores of Regency England, but hers is a darker, more dangerous place.” ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Outstanding!

Complicated plots and finely detailed characters are yet again the author's hallmark.

A murder mystery wrapped in the myth of Camelot.

Beautifully written, but the story drags

The quality of the writing, the rich characters, and the historical context make this worth reading. There are exciting moments, but the plot drags in many places, enough to make it tedious. Narrator is a skilled actress and brings each character to life. Previous books in this series were better.

not a stand alone book in my opinion

this is the continuation of the story of Sebastian, his estranged father, his new wife Hero, and a father In-law who tried to have Sebastian killed. good story. excellent narration.
regarding his marriage, in this case, he may not have the woman he wanted, but he has the woman he needs, and with whom he can build a life.

Less melodrama, more mystery

I was personally relieved when, as the storyline progressed, the author stopped littering the pages with senseless gore and violence, and breathy sex scenes. The characters in themselves are compelling and charismatic, and the plots are intricate without being overly implausible , and I love the details about the regency period and Hero’s deeply-rooted civic-mindedness. It is an intelligent mystery series and doesn’t pander to anyone by having 2-dimensional and cliched heroes and heroines.

The 7th Guilty Pleasure

This series satisfies my need for a guilty pleasure between more challenging reads. What places it a notch above the usual formulaic mystery/romance is that Harris writes well and develops attractive characters who change and grow from book to book. Also, the reader, Davinia Porter, never disappoints. In a novel full of dialogue, her voices for each character, male and female, young and old, are distinct and credible. Yes, the main characters survive tight spots a little too easily by single-handedly killing off their attackers and, yes, the somewhat complex plots stretch belief, but where most series lag by number seven, the author leaves enough intriguing unfinished business in When Maidens Mourn to make me want to skip reading challenges and blitz the remaining titles in the series.

a must read book series

this is a well written and narrated series. every book a new plot that could easily stand alone and the reader aware of who the characters are and how they fit into the plot. can't wait to hear the next book

Better than Chocolate Chip Cookies

Davina Porter could make a Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe feel like a great love story .Combine her talent with CS. Harris's intelligent writing and captivating St. Cyr mysteries, When Maidens Mourn is another "must hear" in the St Cyr series.
