Critic reviews

“Like Georgette Heyer, Harris delves deep into the mores of Regency England, but hers is a darker, more dangerous place.” ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

Outstanding!

Complicated plots and finely detailed characters are yet again the author's hallmark.

A murder mystery wrapped in the myth of Camelot.

Beautifully written, but the story drags

The quality of the writing, the rich characters, and the historical context make this worth reading. There are exciting moments, but the plot drags in many places, enough to make it tedious. Narrator is a skilled actress and brings each character to life. Previous books in this series were better.

not a stand alone book in my opinion

this is the continuation of the story of Sebastian, his estranged father, his new wife Hero, and a father In-law who tried to have Sebastian killed. good story. excellent narration.
regarding his marriage, in this case, he may not have the woman he wanted, but he has the woman he needs, and with whom he can build a life.

Less melodrama, more mystery

I was personally relieved when, as the storyline progressed, the author stopped littering the pages with senseless gore and violence, and breathy sex scenes. The characters in themselves are compelling and charismatic, and the plots are intricate without being overly implausible , and I love the details about the regency period and Hero’s deeply-rooted civic-mindedness. It is an intelligent mystery series and doesn’t pander to anyone by having 2-dimensional and cliched heroes and heroines.

A Regency Mystery which is a Great Read.

I really enjoy this series. I like Sebastian St. Cyr and his exploits amongs the dives of regency England, as well as the low life of the High born. All in all a great read. When a book is read by Davina Porter you know you are in for an enjoyable listening experience. She is one of the truly great readers.

The mystery is tied up druidic rituals and archaeological exploration of a site associated, perhaps, with King Arthur. The amateur archaeologist is a female and she is found murdered and her two nephews have vanished. There are political implications since pamphlets against the Regent are circulating and rumors that King Arthur will return to save his country from the Hannovers are widespread. Sebastian and his wife Hero are in the thick of this mystery.

I have one caveat however. This is book 7 of a fascinating series. I have read the first 6 books since they were not available on Audio ( I hope this will be remedied) but there is secondary mystery which is woven througout the series. It is the mystery of Sebastian's parentage--- Lord St. Cyr is not his father although he is the heir to the title. Each book reveals a little more about his real parentage in addition to the larger mystery and murder which is the feature of each book.

The books trace Sebastian's search for his mother (who is alive) and his effort to learn from her the identity of his real father.. The hunt for the facts about his parentage starts in the first book and each successive book adds a little more information about his birth. So in that sense by starting with Book 7 the reader will miss out on some of the hints about his parentage and the tangled relations with his relatives - esp. Kat.

But that should not discourage anyone from getting this audio book as it is a great read and a fascinating story peopled with very interesting characters -- one can only hope the early books will also appear in Audio.

If you like historical mysteries don't miss this book.

Wonderful book! Wonderful author!!!

There is a reason that a lot of Audible members have given this book five stars - it is Fantabulous!!! The author is amazing. The characters are very well-rounded & complex. The reasearch must have been exhaustive. The reader has, as is usual for Davina Porter, done a wonderful job of bringing this book to life.

I have just one question ... When do we get the rest of the books in this series??? This is the seventh, and Audible also has the sixth. Please, please, please tell me that we will get the first five books also.
