About this listen

This breathtaking, full-color illustrated fantasy is inspired by Chinese folklore, and is a companion to the Newbery Honor winner Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.

Pinmei's gentle, loving grandmother always has the most thrilling tales for her granddaughter and the other villagers. However, the peace is shattered one night when soldiers of the Emperor arrive and kidnap the storyteller. Everyone knows that the Emperor wants something called the Luminous Stone That Lights the Night. Determined to have her grandmother returned, Pinmei embarks on a journey to find the Luminous Stone alongside her friend Yishan, a mysterious boy who seems to have his own secrets to hide. Together, the two must face obstacles usually found only in legends to find the Luminous Stone and save Pinmei's grandmother - before it's too late. A fast-paced adventure that is extraordinarily written and beautifully illustrated, When the Sea Turned to Silver is a masterpiece companion novel to Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Starry River of the Sky.

An amazing Treasure. Highly reccommended

Thank you Grace Lin. What a beautiful and engaging book . ‘When The Sea Turned To Silver’ is a rare & delightful reading experience. My absolute favorite of them all!!
I like that each book may be read by itself . Though the stories weave together.. it is not a “series”.

Like a Chinese one thousand and one nights

I am a twelve year old boy who loves culture and this book fascinated me. The fact that stories never die is very present as well as the love of culture building stories. I would recommend this book to children fascinated by culture as well as parents who want to show their children this concept of a story and it's importance.

PS: this novel was so intriguing that I took time off playing video games just to write this review.

Really amazing book

they say sequels are never better than the original, but I'd say this one proved that generalization, wrong!

Excellent story telling!

If you’re a lover of stories woven in and through each other and characters whose moral compass is tested, but tried and true, this is an excellent read. We listened as a family and loved it! It’s one that I could see us listening to multiple times because the stories are so delicately and well interwoven that as the pieces start coming together you wonder what all you missed the first time and get excited to listen again! If it’s a little challenging to get started…hang in there! It just keeps getting better and better.
