Critic reviews

“Jonathan Auxier’s strange and inventive debut, Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes, is a beautiful adventure told in a dashing and assured voice. It’s Little Nemo in Slumberland meets Oliver Twist. I enjoyed it tremendously.” (Audrey Niffenegger, author of the best seller The Time Traveler’s Wife)

enchanting story!!

this was a much more enchanting story than I originally thought it would be. I downloaded it because I thought my kids would like it, but I ended up listening to the whole thing by myself instead! it wasn't their style ....probably would be loved by most boys or heroic girls, but my earthy girly girls just wrinkled their noses and told me that it wasn't *real* enough for them.

good story for young but eager readers

Would you listen to Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes again? Why?

I would play it again if the kids wanted to listen to it again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

They liked one of the ravens, whose name I can't remember now.

Which scene was your favorite?

The kids really liked the ending when everything finally started to sort out and we found out some secrets about Peter Nimble's past.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No.

Any additional comments?

The story is definitely not for older kids, as it has serious logic gaps --for example, at one point ravens are "flying out of the faucets" or something like that, and there were many other instances where the facts just didn't make sense. However, my kids (6 and 8) didn't notice, or didn't mind when they did catch it. They had a lot of fun with the story.

Such a fun adventure!

This is the type of book I remember forever. My girls, 9 & 12, absolutely loved this book. The perfect amount of mystery, adventure, and lessons through Peter and Sir Tode’s adventures. Thank you for writing such a wonderful story!

My favorite audio book to date!

The author's story style is C. S. Lewis meets Roald Dahl with a little Planet of the Apes just to keep you on your toes. The narrator of this creatively witty story made the voices far better and more entertaining than I could have thought up. Loved every minute!

Great for children!

I am sad to see how many people saw this as discriminatory or horrific. Auxier is not being discriminatory by saying blind people have hightened senses. It is also not a plot device. It is just saying Peter is special. He is actually saying that there is good in being blind. This story isn't even really about Peter or being blind, it is about children and how much power they really have. In the story, Peter's uncle is afraid of children because of how free spirited and stubborn. this shows children how free and how they are just as amazing as adults. It is better that this story is horrific. This is something I think most people need to learn, fairy tales are horrific. They show children mortality and how the world isn't puppies and rainbows. In the original Red Riding Hood, the wolf makes the grandma into soup gives it to Red Riding Hood and eats her, but the woodsman sees this and cuts open the belly of the wolf, saves Red Riding Hood, they both fill his stomach with bricks, and the wolf eventually starves. That is why this story is great for children. The narrator is fantastic. He gives all the characters incredible voices with a variety of pitchs. From the gentle voice of Peg to the old weathered voice of the Professer.

Enjoyable for all ages

My son and I (him at ages 9 and 11) loved listening to this book and the second book Sophie Quire. So well written.
