About this listen

Today, not only is everything digital getting faster, cheaper, and smaller at an exponential rate, we also have the Internet. When these two revolutions - one in technology and the other in communications - joined, an explosive force was unleashed that changed the very nature of innovation. And with any change, we have seen many strategic blunders and extraordinary learning curves along the way.

At last, in Whiplash, Joi Ito and Jeff Howe have distilled nine organizing principles for navigating and surviving this tumultuous period. These principles give us a roadmap on how to thrive no matter what industry we're in.

With Whiplash, two great thinkers tell us how to adapt and succeed in today's unpredictable marketplace.

Enjoyed this write up that delves in to the nine principles of the MIT media lab, that are focused on adapting in an unpredictable and rapidly changing world. I listened slowly as it is dense enough that you want to make sure that you are focused. I came away mesmerized by blockchain technology and learn more about Bitcoin in a weekend than I had learned in 3 years. I like many other illustrative vignettes, such as how the innovation of machine learning helped a computer beat professional "go" player. There were some times when the book felt at times as if it were a commercial for certain products but all-in-all, I walked away with more knowledge about recent innovations and great tips on how to be a better, more adaptive learner.

Great vignettes about a changing world.

The authors provide a lot of detailed examples that illustrate how fast the world is changing. It's fascinating and shocking at the same time (how can we keep up these changes). The authors offer general advice on how to survive these changes, like be flexible, take risks, practice, include diversity, and be resilient. Easier said than done.

Just general advice on how to survive

Excellent narration, makes a very tough subject understandable. This book is all over the place, but that is spot on when it comes to the next decade.

We can see the phenomenal new ideas, new companies, new services, and the uncountable players who have shaped the last decade, when we absurdly thought Microsoft would rule the world.

We know things will move even faster in the next decade, and everyone has the potential to be involved in this amazing alchemy of change. Like an ant colony we all do our part, within our set potentials, what is unknown and beyond comprehension will be what emerges from the crowd, the interactions, the network.

We can't plan, only adjust, react, sit tight, and watch the human network evolve emerging in to something astonishing. Everyone and no one will be in control. A collective intelligence approach to the future.

The future is here, and no one can control it

A very rare book to live by, the principal espoused by the author will change your views of your place at this time rapid change. Change is the one constant in this time in which we live, this is a very hopeful book about how to be adaptive.

For Intellectual curious this is the book

Maybe "adaptability" could sum up the whole book and answer the title question.
There are quite a few great stories here and there throughout the book that support the main theme, but in the end I really do not know why I have to spend the extra hours listening to this book.

Interesting, filled with stories
