About this listen

"A promising debut from a gifted young writer!" (Anna Todd, New York Times best-selling author of the After series)

White Stag, the first audiobook in a brutally stunning series by Kara Barbieri, involves a young girl who finds herself becoming more monster than human and must uncover dangerous truths about who she is and the place that has become her home.

A Wattpad breakout star with more than a million reads! Now expanded and revised.

As the last child in a family of daughters, 17-year-old Janneke was raised to be the male heir. While her sisters were becoming wives and mothers, she was taught to hunt, track, and fight. On the day her village was burned to the ground, Janneke - as the only survivor - was taken captive by the malicious Lydian and eventually sent to work for his nephew Soren.

Janneke’s survival in the court of merciless monsters has come at the cost of her connection to the human world. And when the Goblin King’s death ignites an ancient hunt for the next king, Soren senses an opportunity for her to finally fully accept the ways of the brutal Permafrost. But every action he takes to bring her deeper into his world only shows him that a little humanity isn’t bad - especially when it comes to those you care about.

Through every battle they survive, Janneke’s loyalty to Soren deepens. After dangerous truths are revealed, Janneke must choose between holding on or letting go of her last connections to a world to which she no longer belongs. She must make the right choice to save the only thing keeping both worlds from crumbling.

Not what I was expecting

If you enjoy symbolism and books that make you ponder afterwards - you'll definitely enjoy this book. Myself I was looking for something paranormal and fun and that's not what this book would be IMO. It's dark and goes into subjects ((queue Criminal Minds tv show jingle)) depraved and sometimes warped -

involves a young girl who finds herself becoming more monster than human and must uncover dangerous truths about who she is and the place that has become her home.

Kidnapped and enslaved at 17 Janneke and her new master Soren are on the hunt for the white stag - thus determining the next Gobin King. . While searching for it, they are met with more dangerous tests and situations - sometimes causing flash backs to Janneke's earlier years, sometimes before she was kidnapped from a happy family, and other times haunted by the years of abuse following the kidnapping.

While this is a powerful story of survival, human strength and courage - it's not for anyone suffering from PSTD.

Better than I expected!

Not sure exactly what I was expecting with this story, but it was definitely a pleasant surprise. I was so into this story I didn't notice the time as it passed. Jenneke's tragic back story and the comaraderie between her and Soren, then of course the love story. And didn't realize this was part of a series. Totally getting book 2.
