About this listen
Winner of the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year
This program is narrated by acclaimed reader Bahni Turpin, whose past work includes The Hate U Give and The Underground Railroad
"Bahni Turpin's breathtaking narration of this exhilarating novel will keep listeners rooted to their seats, listening intently...an audiobook not to be missed." (AudioFile magazine, Earphones Award winner)
In Children of Blood and Bone, Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut.
They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.
Now we rise.
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers - and her growing feelings for an enemy.
Praise for Children of Blood and Bone:
"[Narrator Bahni Turpin] excels at customizing her voice to capture the unique personalities of each character.... This excellent, refreshing performance of Adeyemi's exciting debut is recommended for all collections where fantasy is popular." (Booklist, starred review)
"One of the biggest young adult fiction debut book deals of the year. Aside from a compelling plot and a strong-willed heroine as the protagonist, the book deals with larger themes, like race and power, that are being discussed in real time." (Teen Vogue)

Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Writing a new history
"Building on a uniquely West African mythology, Tomi Adeyemi’s debut conjures up a vibrant, amazing fantasy world in which magic once thrived, a segment of the population is grievously oppressed, and a young woman becomes the leader she was meant to be. Bahni Turpin’s mastery of the accents expertly brings the wide array of characters to life, carrying you with the young rebel and her crew across the physical and emotional landscapes that make this listen so special." —Abby W., Audible Editor
Featured Article: The Best Fantasy Audiobooks to Take You Out of This World

Each of the best introduces us to an entirely new world (or a new version of this one), a diverse cast of complexly constructed characters, and a story so mesmerizing we’re reluctant to return to real life. But because the genre is so full of talent, it can be difficult to know what to listen to next. Look no further than this list of the best fantasy audiobooks to get you started.

Nestled between Little St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island, Salix Pointe is not a place that many people know of. Elisa and Tasmin may not want to put too much stock into the folklore of Salix Pointe, but there is a reason that the universe has brought the two women together.

ended abruptly. Feel like missing some story
build up towards the climax was too slow and it was too far towards the end of the book. The book felt like it abruptly ended without any resolution

Powerful writing. Beautiful Performance.
This book is absolutely amazing in its storytelling, in its original mythology, and in its humanity - an epic adventure that should not be missed!
The voices of the characters are so distinct and rich, I feel each one’s pain and joy. Tomi Adeyemi is a truly gifted author.
I can’t wait to experience the next book, and share these stories with my 8th-grade students!
And Bahni Turpin! Gods!!! She is an incredible performer! She gave life to the characters in a way I don’t believe anyone else could have. The melody of her reading still hums in my mind. Thank you!

This book is amazing!
You cannot read this book with recognizing these parallels to Black people all over the world. Indigenous people and cultures brutalized, erased, and oppressed; and yet still fighting for justice and still carrying hope in their hearts. Still carrying that innate music that resides in all of us. Beautiful book Toni, thank you.

Excellent!
This book was an excellent read. I did a marathon listen and finished in 4.5 days! The story kept me on the edge of my seat and awake many nights when I should have been preparing for work and going to sleep. The characters were well developed. The plot was strong. The ritual elements interwoven through the story were amazing. I felt a connection to the ancestors as I read it. I was inspired to look at the magic within myself and my own connection to spirit. The author created a believable fantasy landscape. The book also showed the complexity of the human spirit and its ability to love fiercely and hate all at the same time.
The narrator was also excellent. Listening to the different accents was entertaining. Her voiced submerged me into the story. I will be relistening again and again. This book is a keeper!
