About this listen

In the newest mystery from the national best-selling author of Where the Dead Lie, a brutal murder draws Sebastian St. Cyr into the web of the royal court, where intrigue abounds and betrayal awaits.

London, 1814. As a cruel winter holds the city in its icy grip, the bloody body of a beautiful young musician is found half-buried in a snowdrift. Jane Ambrose's ties to Princess Charlotte, the only child of the Prince Regent and heir presumptive to the throne, panic the palace, which moves quickly to shut down any investigation into the death of the talented pianist. But Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife Hero refuse to allow Jane's murderer to escape justice.

Untangling the secrets of Jane's world leads Sebastian into a maze of dangerous treachery where each player has his or her own unsavory agenda and no one can be trusted. As the Thames freezes over and the people of London pour onto the ice for a Frost Fair, Sebastian and Hero find their investigation circling back to the palace and building to a chilling crescendo of deceit and death....

Fascinating

Each book in the St Cyr series has been a fascinating look at history told in a romantic crime based format. I enjoy the author’s notes as much as the story where she reveals the warp and weft of history on which the characters and stories are woven. Nearing the end of the series, and I wonder where this talented writer will take us next.

Another wonderful adventure in Regency London

I have listened to every one of CS Harris' Lord Devlin mysteries and this competes with the best of them.

Thoughtful plot (but not so intricate that it keeps me awake at night), well developed and interesting characters within enough historical framework to make it compelling listening.

I love this series

If you have read or listened to any of the books of this series you know why I love them. I also love that the writer does so much research to keep the fiction as true to history as she can.

Hero is a hero

This is a very complex story which puts the royal family in a very bad light. Most other books have 'Prinny' as an affable, slightly eccentric buffoon. He is quite different in this story. I wonder if Devlin and Hero ever get tired of people trying to kill them. 🤔

Another excellent book in this series.

C. S. Harris is a wonderful writer. Each book makes you crave the next one. And her plots are complicated enough that you can listen to the series again and again. I start the series over for each new book and I find something that I've missed each time.

The narration is wonderful. Every time Davina Porter reads a book her narration is first rate.

Great historical mystery!

I enjoy this series! I like how developed the characters are & how Sebastian & Hero interact with others & have become like friends through these excellent mysteries that take place in a fascinating era. I love that so many things really happened.

Davina Porter is such an enchanting narrator; she’s in my top 5. I can even hear when she’s smiling. She’s versatile & can do accents quite well.

I would recommend this series to anyone who loves mysteries with some romance thrown in. I’m always excited when the newest Sebastian St. Cyr is available. Enjoy!

CS Harris has done it again!

Thoroughly hooked to the St.Cyr mysteries! This is a must read whether or not you've read the rest of the books or not. Period dramas and mysteries always encapsulate me in a way no other can. Davina Porter is the only narrator to do this series justice and she accomplishes that with style and grace befitting a viscountess.

Historical Mystery

Hero Devlin and her friend Alexi Sauvage are on their way home from visiting a young woman whose story will be integral to the article Hero is writing. The weather is frigid, the worst winter they’ve had in memory, and they are anxious to step into the carriage that awaits them at the end of a lane. Hero suddenly trips on what turns out to be the body of a young woman. When Hero discovers her identity she becomes intent on learning how she ended up on this small lane in a part of town that people of her sort wouldn’t be expected to be found. Hero and her husband Sebastian St. Cyr will make solving this mystery their primary focus but it won’t be easy. Palace interference, politics, family rivalries, and the winter of 1814 will put obstacles in their way as they grow closer to the truth.

The pace was good and kept me turning the pages as I learned quite a bit about that particular winter. Harris’s detailed settings brought me into each scene – from the palace to the Frost Fair on the frozen Thames to the drawing-room in Hero and Sebastian’s home. I enjoyed dipping into this series for the first time. Why Kill The Innocent is book thirteen but I didn’t feel lost. I realize I’ve missed a good deal of main character development which has me adding previous books to my list. Recommended to fans of the author and historical mysteries.

Davina Porter's narration enhanced my enjoyment of the book.

Always interesting

I have thoroughly enjoyed this whole series and I like the authors editions that she puts at the end ,telling the history and stories of where she got some of her ideas from ,which come right out of the history books , often.

If you like history...

I find the mystery and adventure in this series captivating owing to the fact that I never am able to figure out ‘who dunnit’. I am always guessing who the culprit is and without fail, always wrong! Besides the the main characters it’s also the history that grabs me immediately. It’s fascinating to think how daily life was lived back then. The end of the novel connects some of the events in the book to the actual occurrences referred to in history. I’m already looking forward to the next issue! Davina Porter is as always the most talented narrator! I actually look for new audile books by referencing her name in the search engine.
