Story
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

Things didn’t exactly get off on the right foot with Noah Cavallari. Our first encounter was embarrassing, to say the least. When my mother became ill, I inherited the responsibility of making sure our guests were well taken care of.

Beautifully written, really well performed!
I have to admit, this isn't my usual type of book. I needed to listen because I've enjoyed so much of the author's other books. I was really surprised at his versatility with this one. The story is told through the first-person accounts of five different characters. They are easily distinguishable from one another, as this author is a real master of characterization. You'll connect deeply with the characters and become really invested in finding out the real story. The end will not disappoint. Anyone who enjoys big drama, and intimately-written, character-driven fiction will have quite an experience with this book. Highly recommended!

Relationship Status: It's Complicated
When I first began to listen to this story, I was a bit confused with the different characters narrating, but I soon got into the groove of the story. Told from the perspective of five different characters, "Why She Left Us" keeps you guessing until the very end. This isn't your typical happily ever after book, but was a welcome break from all that HEA I love to read! I loved hearing the different perspectives of the same events, which really brings home the notion that you can't only hear one side of a story to get to the truth. While the story was full of intrigue and kept me wanting to hear more, the female narrator's voice was a bit too dramatic for some diary entries and honestly made me want to stop listening. Unless I was really paying attention to whose diary entry was being read, I had hard time distinguishing which character was speaking because of the overly dramatic tone.

A story of love, loss and tragedy
David Dennis, an English teacher born, raised, and educated in Providence, Rhode Island, seems to be a very talented author as well. After delighting his fans with the Brett Cornell series of comedy mysteries, he delivers a dramatic story of love, loss and tragedy with Why She Left Us.
The story is told from the first person perspective of five different narrators and as we meet each of them we unravel another layer of this well thought out plot. The action revolves around a troubled family in the mid ’80s and it is cleverly delivered through highly detailed excerpts from journals and memoirs of those involved.

These are the day to day problems of a family that seems cursed, as the characters can’t seem to catch a break from their tragic lives. Although the story is told through those journal entries I mentioned above, not all involved are truthful and sincere, so we, as listeners, will have to find out their reasons for being deceiving.
This is not a novel for those looking for a happy ending, as there is too much drama and tragedy involved, but it is a very good, well written piece of literature that will make you appreciate David Dennis as an author.

The audiobook version of Why She Left Us is brought to life with talent and passion by two great voiceover artists, actors and narrators, Natalie Eaton and Travis Henry Carter. They deliver and excellent performance, reading, acting and infusing every chapter with their undeniable love for this form of art and their enthusiasm. They give different personalities to each character with specific voices and subtle changes in tone and cadence, while keeping each of them clearly differentiated in the listener’s mind.
The only way this could have been better is if we had five distinct narrators, one of them for every the main characters, but I know how expensive the production of an audiobook is, so I understand the choice made here.
After experiencing Why She Left Us as an audiobook, I am left with a need to listen to more books by David Dennis and am curious to discover his other series, which I understand are very funny and interesting.

New Perspectives Cycle
Why She Left Us by David Dennis is a family drama that takes place in the 1980's. Having been of similar age to the main character in that time period, I could easily relate to many things. I found the various point of views to keep my attention, and I enjoyed the twist. Without giving away spoilers, I was really surprised by the twist. The performance by Natalie Eaton and Travis Henry Carter brought the characters to life. I could easily hear who was speaking, and will definitely listen to them again. I requested this review copy audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. Parts of this book will resonate with me for a long time.

,Complicated
I got this free copy via audiobook boom and this is my voluntary review. I found this story complicated with many twists and turns. Some of the scenes were hard to understand. The narrator was sometimes dull and monotonous. Other areas she inserted the emotions. I am not sure how I felt about this story.

Too much angst, melodrama and pure tragedy
As much as I liked the writing and language of this story, it just isn't my cup of tea. I can't believe an average person would write diary entries like these. There's too much angst, melodrama and pure tragedy. In truth, none of the characters are particularly likable. There isn't really a happy moment in the story. And the great reveal at the end really isn't all that great.
The best thing about this audiobook is the outstanding narration by Natalie Eaton and Travis Henry Carter. Both performances are superb.
