About this listen

BISHOP SULLIVAN

I’ve always known what my future had in store: inheriting the family ranch and having myself a wife and kids to carry on the Sullivan name. Porter Dixon never factored into those plans. We may have spent our teenage years sneaking away to lose ourselves in each other, but he always held me at arm’s length…until the day he up and left without so much as a goodbye.

PORTER DIXON

After everything I’ve lost in my life, it’s important that I keep myself tightly guarded. Especially around Bishop Sullivan. Dad would be rolling in his grave if he found out I was shacking up with a Sullivan, given the bad blood between our families. But eleven years after leaving, I’m back in Laurel Springs with something to prove: I don’t need the Sullivans, nor their land.

Except, damn it all, Bishop has this way of burrowing under my armor. The magnetic draw between us is still too hard to ignore, and what starts out as boss and ranch hand quickly turns into stolen moments and simmering encounters that make it hard to stay angry.

I want to think that love can conquer all and tame my wild heart…but the past isn’t so easy to forget.

I usually avoid cowboy romance but I really enjoyed this sweet M/M tale of second change romance. The narrator was really enjoyable and talented.

I had just finished A.M. Arthur's His Fresh Start Cowboy and found it a bit meh, so I was hesitant to begin this title. I generally like Riley Hart, and Kale Williams is one of my favorite narrators, so I figured I would give it a go - and I am so glad I did!

This broody, twisty tale starts eleven years in the past and sets up the bitterness Parker has for Bishop Sullivan and his family. Too often angry protagonists aren't well developed, but Lee and Hart do a good job of creating a backstory that supports his anger.

Kale Williams does a great job with narration. Parker is quiet and broody, Bishop is sad, yet hopeful. The variety of characters are clearly voiced, unique and distinct.

Smartly crafted with a third party - who we don't dwell on, but is a catalyst - teenaged Parker knows that he can never be Bishop's first choice. When he returns more than a decade later, he is certain Bishop is married and a father. A lost and lonely Bishop is hopeful when a very bitter Parker returns. The source of the bitterness stems from bad business deal between Parker and Bishop's great grandfathers. While that does get a bit thin over the course of the book, it does serve the story well.

What sets this apart from a lot of the "angry" guy storylines, is how the authors treat Parker and his journey. His connection to music and that he finds healing playing in bars, how it affects Bishop when he gets hears it is amazing. It is treated as a way that Parker can express himself and connect with people without needing words. We feel Parkers desire to break out of his anger and isolation. Riley Hart has done this before, without copying it, in Risk The Fall where the need for connection and love overcomes the dead weight of anger and resentment, this is something she writes so well and it is beautifully done here.

The side story revolves around another bitter soul who works on the ranch. He is a struggling single father who is buried beneath addiction and his own rage. His ten year old daughter is a unifying force between all parties in the book. She is also well crafted to not be a source of cute or simple sadness. She is well rounded with interests and abilities that mesh well with the ranch allowing her to be a person and not prop as children too often are. The epilogue is a bit sweet for me, but overall this is a great listen - highly recommended!

Practically perfect in every way!

Riley Hart & Christina Lee wrote a true gem with this one. Sully and Porter knew each other as kids but family tragedy and familial history drove them apart. 11 years later, they find themselves together again and try to heal the hurt of the past. This story has everything; tough cowboys, fun side-characters/relationships, hurt/comfort and growth of everyone in the story. I cannot say enough about how good Kale Williams was in this solo-narrated book. Between his kid voices, slight drawl and emotions, this story was immersive. It's one I've continued to come back to.

Swoony Cowboys

This is a heartfelt, emotional story about two childhood friends finding their way back to each other. With a bit more angst than I usually look for, I never once got frustrated with the characters or pacing.

Bishop and Porter have many reasons why their relationship shouldn’t work, but the chemistry between them is so strong, you never doubt the pull that causes them to overlook those obstacles.

The world of the ranch is vivid and so well crafted, it creates the perfect setting for these two cowboys who have traveled very different paths to find their way back to each other. Thankfully, the scenarios that could lead to miscommunication between them get sorted fairly quickly, and the feud between their families is resolved in a very satisfying way. It was refreshing to have characters own their mistakes and take steps for reparations.

Kale William’s does an amazing job narrating both characters and giving them distinct voices/personalities!

Trigger Warnings:
- One of the MC’s lost both his parents before the main story starts, and his father was an alcoholic.

- A side character struggles with alcohol and has a young daughter this affects.
