One feels he’s not worthy of love. The other fears he doesn't know how. But the sizzling chemistry between them has both tempted to explore the unknown.
Cyrus
I was intrigued by Crow at first glance. Who wouldn't be? He's a mountain of a man, who was raised in a cult, and now lives secluded in the wilderness. But the draw I feel to him goes beyond mild interest. When his intense gaze falls my way it feels like he can see into my soul, to my deepest yearnings and desires.
I took a bold chance venturing to his mountain uninvited. But I can't help myself. Despite Crow’s dangerous facade, I feel at home when I’m near him. I've never felt wanted or needed… until the mountain man took me in his arms.
Crow
The mountain is my home, the only place that truly suits me. I reveled in my solitude... until Cyrus showed up looking as lonely as I felt. The warmth in his gaze made me welcome someone into my home and my heart for the very first time.
The way he smells. The way he feels. I come apart with his every touch. The past haunts us both. Yet when we’re together the weight of them is more manageable. Cyrus is mine and I don’t ever want to let him go. Still, I fear eventually he’ll want to leave the mountain... and for the first time in my life, I don’t want to be alone.

The story telling in this book is unparalleled, weaving a narrative that is as breathtaking in its emotional depth as it is in its stunning portrayal of vulnerability and strength. The characters are not merely characters; they are mirrors reflecting the complex, often messy reality of confronting and overcoming one's past. With each chapter, I seriously found pieces of myself, my fears, and my hopes reflected in the struggles and triumphs of these beautifully flawed individuals.
This book is a testament to the power of love—romantic, yes, but also the love of self that emerges from the darkest of our shadows. "On the Mountain" tackles themes of mental health, substance abuse, and the scars left by trauma with such grace and sensitivity that it's impossible not to be moved.
Riley Hart has outdone herself with this novel, solidifying her place as a titan of LGBTQ+ romance. It is, without a doubt, one of her best works to date. I finished this book feeling a little more understood, a little less alone, and infinitely grateful for the experience it provided.
To anyone standing on the edge, wondering if this book is for them—take the step, immerse yourself in this story. You will not regret this masterpiece of depth and internal beauty, and for those looking for spice – let’s just say you’ll need a cold beverage and a fan pointing at you because the steam will melt your book/audio device. Zane Daniels has quickly become one of my favorite narrators, and he did such an outstanding job bringing this story to life – his emotional range is perfect. Five stars for an unforgettable tale that will linger in your heart long after the final page is turned.

Crow grew up on the mountain in a cult. His father was the leader and was the expected abusive narcissist who finally ended up going to prison. That was the point when everything kind of imploded, and a young Crow was sent to foster care, which was a terrible experience for him and part of why he wouldn’t speak to anyone, until Cyrus.
Cyrus grew up with a loving, yet drug-addicted mother, and after her overdose, he ultimately turned to drugs himself. After getting out of rehab, he uprooted his life, where he eventually ended up in Crow’s path.
These men were both so broken, in very different ways. These differences were what made them the missing pieces to each other in a way no one else could have been. I love hurt/comfort and when characters just tug on my heart strings, and On the Mountain provided plenty of that. From the trauma and grief they had both endured to Cyrus’ struggle with mental illness, this book was a poignant exploration of the journey of two souls finding love, acceptance, and the freedom to give in to their primal urges.
Zane Daniels did an exceptional job, as always. One of my favorite things was that there would be a slight echo when we were hearing the things Crow couldn’t bring himself to say out loud. At first, I thought it was just some background noise that snuck in, but when it happened again, I realized it was intentional. It added an additional element that really brought the story to life and made it easier to differentiate thoughts versus speech from a character who struggled to voice what was in his head.
