About this listen

Ann Burton's critically acclaimed first novel in this compelling Biblical series tells the fictionalized tale of a young Jewish woman who makes and markets pottery to support her family. But when her brother's huge gambling debt threatens to enslave them, she convinces his creditor to marry her and forgive the debt. After her husband sends her to manage his herds in the hills far away, Abigail grows fond of the rustic inhabitants ¿ and of an enigmatic shepherd soldier who's on a collision course with her husband.©2005 Penguin Group USA Inc (P)2007 Recorded Books Poetry

Critic reviews

"Abigail has a brief starring role in the Old Testament as the shrewd intercessor for peace between David and Abigail's miserly husband, Nabal....She's likable and believable, and Burton brings the ancient setting to life." ( Booklist)

I read this book years ago on my Nook, and recently had an opportunity to purchase the audiobook. I received heartwarming satisfaction from hearing the story read so dynamically by the narrator. It is an intriguing in-depth look at two (2) noteworthy biblical figures. I'm aware that it isn't strictly accurate, but the author has a terrific imagination, and I don't fault her for using poetic license. In actuality, it is considered fiction. I think this book is well worth the money or a credit. It brings ancient times vibrantly to life and will even send you to the Bible to read the actual scriptural story. A little more racy in some places that I would have expected from a book about a biblical woman.

Some adult content I didn’t expect

Abigail’s story is by far my favorite Bible story and Ann Burton’s version of it is my personal favorite. It’s wonderful. I love her character, David’s character, and most of the others in the story.

Personally, I don't have reservations about sexuality and the Bible. Correct understanding of the Song of Solomon is quite sensual and I think that's as it should be. When taking such liberties in storytelling, I think the same guidelines should be observed. In my opinion, This author crossed that guideline multiple times. I accept David was a healthy man but to research moralities of the time period, one would seriously question the correctness of this authors choice in this regard. Other than that, I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more about the women of our Bibles history!

Surprising frankness for "Bible" story

This is the story of David's wife Abigail with whom he wed after her very selfish husband became ill and died. It is fiction because it elaborates on who Abigail was and what her life before, during, and right after the death of Nabal. But, it is a likely story and very well aligned with the story in the Bible. I did not find it wordy at all and once I listened through the first chapter I found the narrators voice to be beautiful and easy to listen to. Ann Burton did a great job with this book and I'm looking forward to reading others by her. I highly reccomend this audio book.

Entertaining and well Aligned with the God's Word

I was totally enjoying the beginning of the audible. the interpretation of Abigail's life was intriguing. I did not enjoy the adaptation of how David and Abigail came to be. Unfortunately, it began to sound like a Harlequin romance I read in my teen years. Not what I expected for the depiction of Bible characters.
