About this listen
When Delaney wins a special Hidden Door Festival invitation to artist Ryory Bennigan's studio, she isn't sure quite what to expect. What she finds is an elusive fellow obsessed with the Picts—complete with his own versions of their blue tattoos and vibrant red hair—recreating the stones they left behind. She also meets a visiting paleontologist, Dr. Adam Pace, from the University of Kansas attempting to sell an artifact that might just explain what the Picts' language really sounded like.
Or at least that's what he claimed the artifact was for. Before the deal can close and Ryory can get a closer look at it, Dr. Pace is found dead.
With the police dragging their feet in the investigation, Delaney takes it upon herself to dig into Dr. Pace's past. Her research goes murky as she quickly discovers Pace's shady background—selling fake dinosaur bones and running into some 3D-printing trouble back in Kansas. Could his past have come back to bite him in Edinburgh? And what does his questionable background mean for the mysterious Pictish artifact he was trying to sell to Ryory? Delaney will have to dust off her magnifying glass to uncover the truth behind this case . . . or risk becoming a pile of bones herself.

Story
Penelope Parish has hit a streak of bad luck, including a severe case of writer's block that is threatening her sophomore book. Hoping a writer in residence position at The Open Book bookstore in Upper Chumley-on-Stoke, England, will shake the cobwebs loose, Pen, as she's affectionately known, packs her typewriter and heads across the pond. Unfortunately, life in Chumley is far from quiet, and when the chairwoman of the local Worthington Fest is found dead, fingers are pointed at Charlotte Davenport, an American romance novelist and the future duchess of Worthington.

Story
When Mary Russell was a child, she adored her black-sheep Uncle Jake. But she hasn’t heard from him in many years, and she's assumed that his ne’er-do-well ways had brought him to a bad end somewhere—until he presents himself at her Sussex door. Yes, Jake is back, and with a load of problems for his clever niece. Not the least of which is the reason the family rejected him in the first place: he was involved—somehow—in the infamous disappearance of the Irish Crown Jewels from a secure safe in Dublin Castle.

Not as exciting
Not as exciting as her previous Cracked Spine novels. Perhaps paleontology is just not interesting to me.

Great continuation of the Cracked Spine mysteries.
I liked the previous narrators better. This one was ok, but couldn’t really separate the other Scots characters as well as previous narrators.

Such a disappointment
From the start this series was Polly-Anna-perfect, plots and conclusions always required a fair bit of belief suspending. But I bought them all and listened to them each more than once. Fluff, but fairly well written. No repeated phrases running through each book. No ‘he said’, ‘she said’ ad nausium. Honestly Carrington MacDuffie narration was a good enough reason to listen. Brilliant accents, narration, enunciation, etc.
This book was so bland I lost interest over and over. I listened to some chapters 3 & 4 times because I keep my attention on the drivel that the horrific narration droned into my brain. Last Shelton I pay for. Darn it.
