About this listen

Welcome to Torte - a friendly, small-town family bake shop where the treats are so good that sometimes it's criminal.

After graduating from culinary school, Juliet Capshaw returns to her quaint hometown of Ashland, Oregon, to heal a broken heart and help her mom at the family bakery. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is bringing in lots of tourists looking for some crumpets to go with their heroic couplets. But when one of Torte's customers turns up dead, there's much ado about murder.

The victim is Nancy Hudson, the festival's newest board member. A modern-day Lady Macbeth, Nancy has given more than a few actors and artists enough reasons to kill her, but still. The silver lining? Jules' high school sweetheart, Thomas, is the investigator on the case. His flirtations are as delicious as ever, and Jules can't help but want to have her cake and eat it, too. But will she have her just desserts?

Murder might be bad for business, but love is the sweetest treat of all.

A new fun way to be In Ashland Oregon

I just listened to a nice cosy mystery that takes place in Ashland Oregon. My family goes there almost every summer. Listening to a “local’s” point of view was fun for me. I didn’t guess who dunnit, and I am usually pretty good at doing this. Bravo Ellie, I will be listening to more!

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the book and the narration. I thought the storyline was good and the characters memorable and distinct. The protagonist and her Mom are both likeable. I am impressed with how the author showed with authenticity how people act according to what they believe to be true. And how some never learn from their mistakes while others learn and grow. I will definitely listen to the next book.

I'm not sure I'll read the next one

I heard the whole thing and didn't hate it but I'm not sure if I liked it. The story was interesting but the main character was a little annoying. I did like most of the secondary characters though. The mystery wasn't that interesting and the reason she left her husband was dumb in my opinion so I'm not sure if I want to read another book or not

Enjoyable Cozy

If you can manage to focus more on the storyline rather than the narrator, this is an enjoyable cozy mystery. I enjoyed the characters, town and plot line. But, the narration was a constant distraction. This might be one that is better to read rather than listen. I am going to give the next book in the series a try as I really did enjoy the introduction to the town and characters and I am curious to see how the author continues to build on the current characters and their relationships as well as what new characters will be introduced into the series.

Not predictable

Usually cozy mysteries are so predictable but this one isn't. I mean, it's totally cliché in every aspect but the mystery part. Which is good enough for me. Recommended. The performance drips rhetoric, but the voices are okay, enough variation. Recommended speed 1.3/1.4

Fun Culinary Cozy

What three words best describe Dina Pearlman’s voice?

Older woman from New York who smokes cigarettes. I enjoyed the story but the voice was distracting. It did not match the youngish-Gwyneth Paltrow-look-alike main character. She sounds like a woman in her fifties with a masculine voice with a thick New York-accent. It is the worst match of a voice with a character I've ever listened to. I listen to many many audiobooks, especially cozies and the voice was a distraction for the entire story.

With that being said, Dina does a great job. She can't help how her voice sounds but the producers should've done a better job of matching the voice with the character.
