About this listen

Becoming a writer begins with a simple but important belief: You are a writer; you just need to write.

In You Are a Writer, Jeff Goins shares his own story of self-doubt and what it took for him to become a professional writer. He gives you practical steps to improve your writing, get published in magazines, and build a platform that puts you in charge. This audiobook is about what it takes to be a writer in the 21st Century. You will learn the importance of passion and discipline and how to show up every day to do the work.

Here's what else you will learn:

  • How to transition from wanting to be a writer to actually being one
  • What "good" writing is (and isn't)
  • How to stop waiting to be picked and finally choose yourself
  • What it takes to build a platform
  • Why authors need to brand themselves (and how to do it)
  • Tips for freelancing, guest blogging, and getting published in magazines
  • Different ways to network with other writers, artists, and influencers
  • The importance of blogging and social media and how to use it well to find more readers and fans of your writing

You Are a Writer will help you fall back in love with writing and build an audience who shares your love. It's about living the dream of a life dedicated to words. And it all begins with you.

Inspiring and energizing

I picked this up because of the reviews and was not disappointed. Author is a great speaker and has a lot of wise observations. His tone is positive and encouraging. I learned from this book and am inspired to put more effort into my writing. Many thanks for putting your book and thoughts "out there".

Jeff Goins gives a good refresher

Jeff Goins summarizes a lot of information that I have read or heard or lived before. However, as one who has spend too much time putting off the writing, this book reinforces the simple truth. which is that writers must write. Books like this one are a good push for those of us who have been teetering on the brink for too long.

Most Practical!

Jeff Goins is the only author/speaker whose emails I keep in a separate folder so I can read and listen to over and over again. I've listened to this book many times and each time I remember something new and very valuable. He is so down to earth, easy to understand, and encouraging.

Jorge Harrington

Loved this book. He speaks like Seth Godin. I read Seth Godin all the time! He influenced me to write more and more. Now Jeff Goins has done the same. I love reading. Poke like these. I recommend them to anyone. Keep up the good work.

I Am a Writer

I had gotten into the trap of marketing before I was really writing. This book showed me what I was doing and now I'm committing to writing instead of avoiding it. Thank you. Much of the information in this book seems more useful to non-fiction writers which I wish I had known before I bought it. But there was still a lot of information that even I, as a novelist, found invaluable. I was very impressed with his performance too. A lot of authors can't do their own voice work.

A Must Read and Read Again!

Jeff wrote a book that inspired me to expose my writing through social media.

When I listened the first time through I started a blog the next day. I increased my social media presence from none to thousands of followers.

He writes about the fact that if you put in the work things will begin to happen. Six month later an essay of mine was published, my blog was spotlighted, I was interviewed and as of today an essay is being released on a podcast.

I reread it again and just got hired as a consultant for a startup tech company all due to his step by step approach.

It appeals to beginners and seasoned closet writers who are afraid of the next step or do not know in the current market what that is.

I like that he discusses each of the steps in a concise manner. You think as you listen, "I can do that."

Thanks Jeff for the work you put in to help those not as far down the path by lending a hand at just the right time each time I listen to your words.

Headed for my third listen now!

Sincerely,

Christine Buyce

Solid, short

Straightforward advice succinctly written. A few of the tips were a bit vague, but I'm sure I can find more on his websites if I look.
