About this listen

A revolutionary playbook for building generational wealth, no matter where you grew up—from the founders of the explosively popular podcast and financial literacy platform Earn Your Leisure

You deserve to be rich.

You deserve to make a purchase without fear that your check might bounce. You deserve to go on vacation. You deserve to care for loved ones without worrying about bills. You deserve to live the way you want, without reservations or fear. You deserve freedom—financial freedom. If you agree, you’ve come to the right place.

We grew up in New York playing basketball together. As kids, both of us were fascinated by finance, curious about the stock market and how money moves among systems and pockets. But we began to notice that—for people in our community—hard work wasn’t enough. The system wasn’t set up to help people like us turn our hustle into lasting wealth.

We started Earn Your Leisure to change that. We never could have imagined the response. Soon our little podcast started to feel more like a financial revolution. But a podcast can do only so much. This book is our answer to the thousands upon thousands of people who have asked us for a detailed blueprint. The key to earning your leisure is to see money as a strategic tool for wealth development. In You Deserve to Be Rich, you’ll learn how to:

• Deal with the psychological toll of growing up living paycheck to paycheck.

• Create income-building strategies outside your nine-to-five, from investing to side hustles.

• Use passive income to put you in control of your time and lifestyle.

• Master tax and insurance systems and identify (legal) loopholes to maximize wealth.

• Navigate family financial drama and find ways to support your community.

That’s just the start. This book is full of tips, insights, and stories about real people, just like you, who have used the tools of wealth building to overcome barriers and build the life they want.

You deserve to be rich. This is the playbook to make it happen.

Critic reviews

Earn Your Leisure podcasters Bilal and Millings share their formula for accruing wealth. . . . Throughout, Bilal and Millings bring a welcome recognition of the financial hardships faced by Black individuals. . . . Buoyed by the authors’ can-do spirit (‘If you can see it, you can have it’), this stands out in the crowded field of personal finance guides.”Publishers Weekly

“EYL has written more than just a financial guide—it’s a blueprint for breaking free from the systems that keep us broke and disempowered. They are giving us the jewels to take control of our money, invest wisely, and build generational wealth. A must read for anyone looking to level up financially and mentally. It’s food for your entrepreneurial spirit, but you have to do your own dishes.”—Charlamagne Tha God

"With You Deserve to Be Rich, Troy Millings and Rashad Bilal from Earn Your Leisure offer a powerful blueprint to get started on your journey building generational wealth. Like me, Troy is a former teacher—and it shows in the clear, actionable, and spot-on advice he and Rashad deliver in these pages. This book will be a great step to achieving the life you’ve always dreamed about.”—Tiffany Aliche, aka The “Budgetnista,” New York Times bestselling author of Get Good with Money

Experienced Audible Listener

I have listened to audible books for the past 10 years as a convenience. I usually buy the paper version of a book as well because I just like reading actual books. This book is a gold mine of gems for any listener seeking to increase their financial literacy and decrease the stress and strain of financial illiteracy. If you are a seasoned Audible listener but have not actually been following these guys on assets of liabilities or Market Mondays or best test you would not understand their cadence or have followed the fact that they genuinely wanted to record this themselves instead of hiring a professional, you may not like it because the authors read the book to provide a personal touch and we’re not trained in that manner. As a follower of their podcast and shows I personally know this is how they always sound when they’re reading something off so I was OK with listening to this version. I also bought a hard copy when I went to the book signing in Washington DC, I look forward to the next one.

Good book, hard listen

Forwarning, listening to Rashad's chapters may be a little rough. If you're not going to put in the effort to make the listening enjoyable, hire someone to do it. Aside from that, this book's content is necessary for the community—more than Rich Dad, Poor Dad.

I believe it’d be a great book but couldn’t get pass the narrator

I was really excited to support these gentlemen, as I believe they provide valuable information in a digestible way. I pre-ordered the book super excited for the audio version as it allows me multitask. Unfortunately I wish I would have purchased the hard copy to read it on my own as the narration is awful. I honestly couldn’t get past chapter 1 given how slow and inconsistent the narrator is. At times certain words and/or sentences will speed up significantly and then instantly slow down. It is as if they are reading material that is not their own and it sounds a bit robotic. I definitely think this could be a hit if perhaps they go back and re-narrate the book to have more flow. I found it to be extremely distracting because I was second-guessing if my speed had actually increased or if the volume had increased by mistake. Difficult listen for me personally, considering this. It’s their first go at this so wishing them all the best, but this definitely needs a bit more support from their publishers/team.

Good foundational knowledge

Good foundational knowledge and some motivation scenarios. The narration left a lot to be desired. Sometimes Rashad sounded frustrated &:or tired. Again good knowledge but not enough constructive information for me.

I appreciate this book, content; relatable and motivating.

The title of my review summarizes my opinion of the book and I wish the authors all the best of success. While I enjoy the convenience of audio books, the experience, tone, cadence, fluidity and tone from the reader is critical to keeping me engaged. This portion of the review more about the narration than the content. My biggest challenge that one of the readers is reading instead of "telling the story". There are portions where it seems that the reader is reading instead of demonstrating their familiarity with the text, telling the story and using the text as a reference. There is value in using a professional story teller, I'd love to hear this audio book with intentionally placed inflections and strategic injections of energy and not because an author is catching his breath.
Shared respectfully and because I cared to do something I otherwise don't, leaving a review.
RLHJr.
(Example - "if 2 million dollars was....." that shift in energy was great but the volume and fluidity tailed off and back to reading mode.)

No Energy, Nothing new

Sorry but this just didn't provide any real value for me and the format was hard to follow. Narration also seems low on energy which makes the plane Jane financial advice even harder to follow.

okay book

The book was basic and okay. The second reader was bad. At times he read 100mph and then he would read so slow and horrible. At times I had to speed up his speaking. His flow took away from the ability to process the information

extremely difficult to listen to.

I wish I would have bought a paperback version of the book. I wanted to support the authors, but I feel like they did not care about the importance of good narration. Hopefully next time they'll hire someone to do the reading. I wasted money on this version of the book.
