Publisher's summary

Growing up as a fat girl, Virgie Tovar believed that her body was something to be fixed. But after two decades of dieting and constant guilt, she was over it and gave herself the freedom to trust her own body again. Ever since, she’s been helping others to do the same.

Tovar is hungry for a world where bodies are valued equally, food is free from moral judgment, and you can jiggle through life with respect. In concise and candid language, she delves into unlearning fatphobia, dismantling sexist notions of fashion, and how to reject diet culture’s greatest lie: that fat people need to wait before beginning their best lives.

Excellent

I feel like this book articulated everything that I feel. Dismantling the effects of fat phobia, and its roots and racism and misogyny. My only critique is that I wish the book was longer.

open ears and mind.

this woman takes a lot of flack from people (mostly men) for her outspoken and unapologetic views. I started following her insta because I wanted to know why these views are SO controversial, so wrong. I ended up finding I agree with so much of what she says. listening to her story made me see the similarities in my own. I even remembered back fondly to when I gave a boy a swirly for calling me a fat cow at the public pool. I marched right into the boys room after him and gave him what he clearly deserved ( in my head anyway) and asked myself, why did I not let that boy take my self worth from me then, yet let the media and such take it from me now. I remember my mother who was a bisexual feminist that told me my body was beautiful natural and never let me "diet" who told me I need to properly nourish my body. I have to say this book makes me think about why people want to be thin even at the cost of health, and how I have been the same way to the point of starving myself as a teen. even now at 34 I want to shrink my body.

Great Unexpected 5 Star Read

One of my favorite booktubers celebrated their birthday recently so I decided to read a book they highly recommended in their honor. This book won’t be for everyone but I got something special out of it. I feel more positive on thoughts I have had that the author was able to put into words. It’s also nice yet sad hearing some personal stories the author shared from their life or other people they know that reminded me of past events I’ve experienced. There were times I had to stop what I was doing to absorb some of the information and words I heard. Definitely want to buy a physical copy to underline some favorite quotes. So glad “You Have the Right to Remain Fat” was recommended to me as I had never heard of it or the author so I would have never read it.

Loved it

My only negative is that it was too short!
I learned a bit more about anti- dieting, More so about feminism! Loved it!

it's ok

based on the synopsis, it makes it sound like this book is for everyone, but it's super focused on fatphobia in regards to cis-women. it's not a terrible book, but if you're going to be cis-woman focused, I wish you'd actually say that in the synopsis. as an afab enby, I get all of what's here, I do. but if I had known just how cis-centric this one was, I would've skipped it. good info for others, just not what I was personally looking for.

the author is an amazing narrator of her own work, either way, though.
