About this listen

When young Armstrong Todd's mother sends him to spend the summer in her native rural Mississippi, the Chicago-bred 15-year-old is unused to the segregated ways of the Deep South. So when the black youth utters a few innocuous words in French to a white woman, he has no idea of the impending firestorm he has ignited. Armstrong ends up paying the ultimate price when the offended woman's husband and his friends decide to teach the youth a lesson. Every character, black and white, is changed forever in this tale of poverty, the legacy of justice, and the healing power of love.

This book is a classic, i read it when it was first released. So when I saw that it was Audio I thought great! But I was really disappointed with this audio version. The sound quality was terrible, It left out big portions of the story. If you ever get a chance to read it you will really enjoy it.

abridge sucks

The only issue with this audiobook is that it literally cuts out all of the chapters with Clayton in it and that’s like a good third of the book. Smh

Great story, good performance, so what the heck?!

Would you try another book from Bebe Moore Campbell and/or Alfre Woodard and Allison Smith ?

Yes. Defintely. This is a great book but Caution it is the abridged version and left out a lot of relevant information. I read a hard copy of this before I listened to this so it was not as good.

the book is great, there is a chapter missing. I checked the actual book. I definitely recommend this book, the details, the way the author describes all of the characters thoughts, well done. Everyone should read this, we are no better than those we judged.

great

This reading isn’t the whole book. Lots of parts are missing. It’s very condensed. There were a lot of characters missing that were all affected by the tragedy of this book. Disappointed

Not full book.

This was one of the best books I’ve listen to. I laughed and cried the whole time listening. The narrators did an awesome job.

Highly recommended

What an amazing telling of a depiction in our country's history. The writer makes the story come alive by changing words on a page to words that dance in your head as you read/hear the story. This writer is extremely talented and I am happy that I accidentally happened upon this marvelous piece of work.

A must for anyone...

Didn’t really like the ending. Wish it had been more expansive. Needed more detail of their lives.

Evolving

the decision to leave the Pinochet storyline out was an enormous disservice to this book! I urge the listener to read the actual book!

Clayton Pinochet Left Out!?!?
