About this listen
You can't kill the dead! Like any good monster, the zombie has proven to be ever-evolving, monumentally mutable, and open to seemingly endless imaginative interpretations: the thralls of voodoo sorcerers, George Romero's living dead, societal symbols, dancing thrillers, viral victims, reanimated ramblers, video-gaming targets, post-apocalyptic permutations, shuffling sidekicks, literary mash-ups, the comedic, and, yes, even the romantic.
Evidently, we have an enduring hunger for this infinite onslaught of the ever-hungry dead. Hoards of readers and listeners are now devouring zombie fiction faster than armies of the undead could chow down their brains. It's a sick job, but somebody had to do it: explore the innumerable necrotic nightmares of the latest, greatest, most fervent devotion in the history of humankind and ferret out the best of new millenial zombie stories: Zombies: The Recent Dead.
Full author list: Kevin Veale, Michael Marshall Smith, Tim Lebbon, David Prill, Steve Duffy, Max Brooks, Nik Houser, Andy Duncan, David J. Schow, Joe R. Lansdale, Neil Gaiman, Alice Sola Kim, Gary A. The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Story
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

Story
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity.

Story
BANGKOK, MARCH 2018. The world looked on in horror as millions of innocent lives were snuffed out in a matter of hours. Countless men, women and children slaughtered without mercy, torn apart by a violent mob that attacked without reason, motive or warning. Tom Freeman witnessed the aftermath. He reported on the tragedy and looked into the eyes of the sole survivor, an old friend, and what he saw looking back sent him running home to the United States. Back to safety. Back to a place where the world made sense, and the putrid stink of the dead didn't haunt his nightmares.

Story
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Good collection of Zombie Stories
Overall I really enjoyed the collection of stories. I found myself stopping what I was doing and just listening to the story. Many of the stories were very well done and brought something a little different to the idea of zombies, I will admit that several I was disappointed with how the story did not seem as much to finish as just stop. They felt incomplete, like the author ran out of time or ideas to move the story along.

It was good, but could have been better
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I would have taken out some of the stories as to me they didn't seem to mesh well with the zombie setting. I would have added in some more gory stories. Some of the stories just weren't very "scary" or gut-wrenching enough to be called a "Zombie tale."
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have made sure my zombie anthology had the grittiest and darkest stories possible. More gore, more things that make sense in a zombie setting.
Any additional comments?
I liked it somewhat, but I felt bored during a few of them. Some of the stories had no real action and some were just bizarre. I think in a zombie anthology we should be sticking to what zombies are about: meat and brains. Yes that might seem cookie cutter, but you have to have the proper elements of that type of zombie fiction.

Not Happy
I don't like short stories. Short stories made to look like a novel. Someone different reading each story.

Not all zombies stories are fun to listen to.
Would you try another book from the authors and/or the narrators?
Since this book has several authors. I would look for addition books on the authors I liked and stay away from the one I did not liked.
What was most disappointing about the authors’s story?
Several stories were too silly and not interesting to listen to.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
All narrators brought the books alive. Too bad half the stories suck!
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Zombies?
Not into supernatural were you need to go demonic to make your book beliveible.
Any additional comments?
I was suckered to buy this auible because it had Max Brooks name on it.

Some of these stories are good. Some are great. Some are like attending a script reading of Clerks while tripping on acid.

Unique zombie stories
While some of the stories did drag, a majority of them present zombies in ways not overused in other books, TV shows, or movies.
