Berkeley uses the Socratic mode of inquiry in "Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous" to question fundamental beliefs about knowledge and reality. These dialogues are between Hylas (whose name is derived from the ancient Greek word for matter) and Philonous, whose name means "lover of mind." The new physical sciences developed in the seventeenth century supported the materialism proposed by Thomas Hobbes and several other philosophers. This worldview proclaimed that all of reality consists of nothing but matter in motion, thus promoting atheism and ethical skepticism.

This remarkable philosophical and investigational effort focuses on giving the listener a historical sense of the fascinating relationship between the development of science and religious thought. Though by today's standard it is of course a bit embryonic (science has moved on so much since Galileo, and even since Einstein) it is still captivating and essential listening for those interested in both the spiritual and the scientific.

In seinem philosophischen Hauptwerk Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung verwirft Arthur Schopenhauer jede Form von Glücklehre und entwickelt aus einem einzigen genialen Gedanken heraus eine denkbar pessimistische Sicht auf das Dasein als solches und eine Lehre von der Verneinung des Willens zum Leben. Kaum an einer anderen Stelle in seinem Werk spricht er dies so klar und so ausführlich aus wie in den hier zu hörenden Ergänzungen zum vierten Buch des 1. Bandes seines Hauptwerks.

'Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness' is the best-known phrase from the Declaration of Independence, one of the most important documents of the eighteenth century and the whole Enlightenment Age. Written by Thomas Jefferson, it is frequently evoked today as a shorthand for that idea we call the 'American Dream'. But this is a line with a surprising history. Rather than being uniquely American, the vision it encapsulates - of a free and happy world - owes a great deal to British thinkers too.
