In seinem Buch "Die Rätsel der Philosophie" (1914), zunächst erschienen unter dem Titel "Welt- und Lebensanschauungen im neunzehnten Jahrhundert" (1900/1901) stellt Rudolf Steiner die Entwicklung der abendländischen Philosophie in den Kontext der Evolution des menschlichen Bewusstseins.

In Goethes Weltanschauung fasste Steiner die Ergebnisse seiner von 1883 bis 1897 sich erstreckenden Studien über Wesen und Bedeutung der naturwissenschaftlichen Schriften Goethes in einer bündigen und zugänglichen Weise zusammen. This lecture was held just over one hundred years ago, in the aftermath of the First World War and the ‘flu pandemic’ of 1917-1919 — a period of far-reaching constraints and widespread human suffering. The correspondence to our own times are hard to ignore. In these circumstances, it is all the more appropriate to bring this lecture to the fore.
