These fifteen Songs of Degrees are songs of ascents. They immortalize the spiritual experiences of ascents of the soul. In our seeking for union with God in life, we pass through different stages of growth such as purification, enlightenment and union. In each step, there are lessons to learn. Though the first letter to the Corinthians had to address their various problems and carnality, the fellowship of God's Son, Jesus Christ, is its emphasis. Zechariah’s prophesying began with a call for the remnant of the children of Israel to return to Him: “Return unto me, … and I will return unto you” (1:3b). God is working to recover His kingdom on this earth. Our Lord Jesus came into this world to re-establish God’s authority. Why do the righteous suffer? This is an age-long dilemma. The human soul agitates over it. Man's wisdom endeavors to solve it. But God alone has the right answer. In the book of Job, God reveals the hidden purpose behind the suffering of the righteous. For suffering is unto sonship. Through suffering we grow into such a living knowledge of God that delivers us from self and fills us with Christ. The last voice to be heard in the Old Testament was through Malachi. Then the first voice in the New Testament spoke of the same thing. Stephen Kaung gave these messages on vision in March and April of 2014 in Richmond, VA. This was not only a charge given to the assembly in Richmond, VA but to the body of Christ. Just as Paul’s letters were to specific churches and people, yet the body of Christ has been enriched from them throughout the church age. What is the concern of your heart today? Is it that since you live comfortably, you do not care for the testimony of Jesus? True, it will be difficult for those who want to maintain the testimony of Jesus. Your brothers and sisters are already on the verge of spiritual annihilation. Do you give yourself to prayer for the Lord’s testimony? God’s call to his people today is to come out of the complexity and the perplexity of the world (Babylon) and return to the simplicity that is in Christ (Jerusalem), gathering together unto his name.

Stephen Kuang uses the life of Simon Peter to illustrate the three principal aspects of Christian discipleship: The Call, the Condition, and the Consolation.

Having come to see Christ Jesus, we are now ready to see his church, about which Jesus had declared this: "I will build my [church], and hades' gates shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18b). From this declaration we realize that the church is not the product of the work of man, but it is the Lord Jesus himself who builds the church. Hence, in scripture, the church is called "the Christ" (I Corinthians 12:12c; Ephesians 3:4b, 8b Darby).

Christianity is Jesus Christ. It is not the teaching, doctrine, system, or organization of Christ. Rather, it is Jesus Christ himself. We need to see him as God sees him. Yet this can only come about by revelation from above. The Holy Spirit will reveal Jesus to us. And when we do see him as God sees him, we will fall down and worship. Such, then, is the intent of this series of messages, whose overarching theme is best summed up in the author's choice of title to the entire series: "But We See Jesus" (Hebrews 2:9a).

Thank God, through the redemptive work of Christ, we Christians are to have our families restored to God's original purpose. This short series of messages, delivered by the author before a gathering of God's people in Washington, DC, beginning in September 1974, is therefore being published as a way of helping Christian believers elsewhere to see and carry out God's purpose for the family. May the Lord bless all who listen to this volume.

The call to discipleship follows closely in time upon the call to come to Christ our Savior (see Matthew 11:28-29). It is a call to all believers. It is God's way of fulfilling His eternal purpose in and through His people, that purpose being that they be conformed to the image of God's beloved Son. This series of four messages on the subject of Christian discipleship was delivered in Alhambra, California on 19, 20, 26 and 27 February 2011. They were transcribed and slightly edited for publication. May God use these messages as a means for encouraging God's people in the way of discipleship.

In 1990 Stephen Kaung shared on ministering the word of God before a group of church leaders from various places. The transcripts of those messages have now been compiled for future generations. This book is meant to be a companion to The Ministry of God's Word by Watchman Nee, which was required reading for all who attended that leadership conference.
