Francia y la poesía fueron los primeros grandes amores de Stefan Zweig, que dedicó una buena parte de su obra a sacar de su «aparente oscuridad» a los genios de la creación y contagiar así sus pasiones a los lectores. A petición de la editorial berlinesa Schuster & Loeffler, el joven escritor compuso esta breve monografía sobre Paul Verlaine, su primer ensayo biográfico. Esta pequeña joya publicada en 1 9 0 5, que incluye traducciones de algunos de los poemas más emblemáticos del poeta, inauguró en la carrera de Zweig un género literario en el que desplegaría todo su talento y sensibilidad.

Qui, nel 1941, un anno prima di uccidersi, scrive "Il mondo di ieri", un'elegia dell’Europa che è scomparsa con la Prima guerra mondiale - il composito Impero asburgico, il fermento culturale di Vienna, Berlino e Parigi - e di quella cosmopolita e in pace che si pensava in costruzione negli anni '20 ma disintegrata dal fascismo e il nazismo.

"The others form the human being, I depict him; and here I present an individual who is quite poorly formed and whom I would certainly make largely differently if I had to reshape him. But now that's the way he is." This phrase from the famous essays of Michel de Montaigne outlines the character of the author and his work. Montaigne wrote his essays not from a position of certainty but from an awareness of his inadequacy. He thus reveals a level of critical self-reflection that, before his time, was rarely put on paper.

According to Stefan Zweig, no contemporary author, not even Marx or Nietzsche, delivered the radical spiritual shock that Tolstoy's works gave millions and millions of people around the world. Stefan Zweig dedicated this largely biographical work to the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Zweig acknowledges Freud's scientific contributions and highlights some weaknesses of his fellow countryman. Freud's actual achievement is less to be found in scientific detail, but in the multitude of his contributions with which he enabled and inspired the thinking, rethinking and research of many of his successors. Zweig describes the life of Freud and the genesis of psychoanalysis with his usual linguistic virtuosity.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire.
