Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc (1864 -1941) was a French novelist and writer of short stories. His famous character, Arsène Lupin, is a master of disguise, a historian, gentleman, and a burglar. In these adventures, Lupin organises a series of flamboyant heists under the nose of the determined Inspector Ganimard. He carries out the most amazing burglaries without ever leaving a clue. The innocent and poor have nothing to fear from him, but the rich and powerful, and the detective who tries to ruin the fun, are the targets of Arsene’s mischief.

"The Extraordinary Life of Arsène Lupin in Prison", as per the original title, opens with a letter from Lupin to Baron Nathan Cahorn. Lupin demands the wealthy Baron send him several of his most precious valuables, or else... he will come and take everything. But Lupin is incarcerated in the famous La Santé Prison! When the deadline comes, detective Ganimard and his men keep a keen eye on the belongings.

The first story, "The Blonde Lady", opens with the purchase of an antique desk by a mathematics professor. The desk is subsequently stolen, as it turns out, by Arsène Lupin. Later, both Lupin and the professor realize that a lottery ticket, left inadvertently in the desk, is the winning ticket, and Lupin proceeds to ensure he obtains half of the winnings while executing a near-impossible escape with a blonde lady. After the theft of the Blue Diamond, again by a blonde lady, Ganimard made the connection to Lupin and an appeal was made to Herlock Sholmes to match wits with Lupin.
