About this listen

Mysterious tech, a devious AI and a couple of scientists in over their heads collide in the latest sci-fi adventure from the number one best-selling author of the Bobiverse series.

Physicist Philip Moray is having a good day. He’s chipping away at his big work project. The lunch in the cafeteria is at least edible. And he’s looking forward to his end-of-the-day drink and a soak in the hot tub.

Then, a strange device turns up in his office. A piece of technology he has never seen before–and shouldn’t even exist.

Suddenly, corpses start turning up, eco-activists go on the attack, random people suffer bizarre symptoms. And every time the authorities get a lead, it traces right back to Philip and his colleague, Celia Hunt.

Then, a mysterious caller contacts Philip–and, suddenly, staying out of jail is the very least of his problems.

Apparently, that hot tub’s going to have to wait.

The book really is a fun take on the AI craze and as always Ray does an amazing job. I wish the AI had more narrative time in the book, but his parts were great!

A fun spin on the AI craze

Already a fan of the author from the Bobiverse series, and like those books, this novel does not disappoint. One of the things I really enjoy about Dennis Taylor’s writing is that he clearly has a background with hands-on experience in R&D and product development/product management, and it always comes through in the coolest ways.

I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good science fiction techno-thriller.

Also, just to bring it all home, the narration by Ray Porter absolutely makes it. I’m really happy he’s working with Dennis Taylor again.

It’s also a great book even if you haven’t read any of the author’s previous work—you’ll want to after this!

Just a really enjoyable and fun book

I've seen a couple of complaints about its a slow starter, but I think it's well done. it's not easy to build a future world and incorporate what you think that world would look like from a first person perspective, I appreciate the effort. Ray is as amazing as ever. I'm going immediately back in for round 2!

Dennis clearly put a lot of work into taking new directions in his writing

Every one of his books has been a thought provoking masterpiece of wit, snark and plenty of puns. This latest work does not disappoint! It was a damn fun ride to boot!
I think that Taylor is one of the best Sci Fi writers of our time, on par with Spider Robinson and Phillip K Dick. I hope there will be a follow up to Flybot.

I love Dennis E Taylor!

I wouldn't say this was Dennis E. Taylor's best work, but it was a fun and engaging story. he definitely put some thoughts into a realistic future dystopian apocalypse and left us with some questions about A.I.

A gripping story.

IMHO, Dennis is on par with Heinlein, Clark, Bradbury, Scalzi, Weir, et al. Not as many geek-culture references as usual, but that's a good thing. Dennis demonstrates range within the sci-fi genre. Just enough hard-science to keep it realistic, and not an endless stream of Bobiverse.

Another fantastic tale from Dennis!

I am sure to listen to fly out again maybe even several times I think Ray Porter is one of the best narrators Audible has. I think Marvel should make some of Donald E Taylor’s books into movies they would make great movies. The characters are just so much fun. Can’t wait for the next book.

…. In the spirit of Dennis E. Taylor’s other strong sci-fi short stories and novels. I laughed out loud when a character asked what to call a new entity and suggested, “Bob?” But you don’t need to know anything about the Bobiverse to greatly enjoy this novel. There’s definitely a game of “what did I figure out and when,” and I’ll admit that I was close but off-base in enjoyable ways. I also love that the good guys in DET’s works are genuinely nice people - something I wish I saw more of in the world and in literature!

Strong stand-alone novel

Dennis Taylor is that rarity among authors for me: someone I can trust for a great read.

I was expecting Bobiverse when I saw a new book, What I got was something entirely different—with a Bobiverse Easter egg—but just as engaging in its own right.

Yet, as I write this, I realize that it could very well fit in the Bobiverse universe.

If you’ve read Dennis Taylor, you don’t need my recommendation. If you’re not (yet) a fan and you’re into hard science fiction that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Spybot is the sweet spot.

Wonderful Adventure
