As a young and newly qualified detective, Superintendent Signe Brask is put on the case of 10-year-old Mille who has disappeared without a trace during a family trip. Despite a vigorous search, the girl is never found. Ten years later, a young woman shows up in Copenhagen claiming to be Mille. The family welcomes her home, but where has she been for 10 years? When Signe goes to close the case, she makes some unexpected discoveries. And that's exactly when the family is hit by a new tragedy....

Signe Brask is having a hard time with her new boss. In an attempt to humiliate her, he has sent her to Klitmøller, where she will work as a substitute patrol officer. But it doesn't take long before Signe faces a new case. The priest's young, beautiful wife has disappeared without a trace, and it turns out that beneath the surface there is a fierce religious war simmering in the small community of fishermen and surfers. The investigation with the local officer Dennis is difficult and is further complicated by the fact that Signe is confronted with her own past.
