Twelve-year-old Mia McKenna has grown up in the darkness. It’s all she’s ever known, and she finds comfort in it. Like nearly all the cities in the Kingdom of Lunis, her home of Nubis was plunged into a forever night years ago by the shadowy Reaper King—a figure now only known in nightmares, a cautionary tale warning children to stay safe inside the tall city walls. But all that changes when a mysterious cult storms Nubis, capturing everyone with the ability to protect it.

Nubis has been plunged into the Darkness by the shadowy Reaper King—a figure children know only through their nightmares. When his minions capture her parents and take over the city, Mia, her friends and her little brother must travel across the Nightmare Plains to reach Stella, the City of Light. But getting there isn't going to be easy. Mia must learn to harness her umbra taming abilities if she stands any chance of confronting the king and rescuing her parents. If she can't, she'll lose her family—and her soul—to the Darkness forever.

The Elite are imprisoned, the Reaper King is once again banished from the world, and the city of Nubis is trying to return to normal. So is Mia, but it’s not so easy. Coming to terms with new powers and being the tamer of two umbra, she’s also plagued by nightmares. Is the fear all in her imagination? Or are the agents of darkness somehow planning another assault? Once again, Mia’s skills and resilience will be tested to their limits.

The Reaper King’s attempt to break free and thrust the rest of the Kingdom of Lunis into darkness has been thwarted, but all is still not well in Nubis, Mia’s moonlit kingdom home. The whole city is on guard for another attempt to resurrect the Reaper King. Though imprisoned, his followers, the Elite, are still inside the city, and tensions among the population are at an all-time high. Meanwhile, Mia struggles to cope with her new Lightcaster powers and to fit in with the rest of the tamers, many of whom are skeptical of her abilities.

Having grown up in the moonlit city of Nubis, Mia McKenna has always found comfort in the darkness. And yet the dark days following her father’s death at the hands of the Reaper King aren’t something she’s prepared to handle. Daniel McKenna was Mia’s rock. He was the whole city’s rock as the leader of the umbra tamers—the highly trained fighters who protect Nubis from atop creatures made of shadows and starlight. Without him, Mia, the tamers, and all of Nubis are lost.
