About this listen
Lusam grew up in the relative safety of the Elveen mountains with his grandmother. She taught him the basics of magic and discovered, quite by accident, that he possessed a unique skill never seen before: the ability to hide his magical aura from the mage-sight of others.
Dark secrets surround Lusam's origins, and the dark agents of the Empire will stop at nothing to kill Lusam. But before Lusam can be taught all he needed to know about his past, his grandmother unexpectedly dies of a fever, and Lusam finds himself homeless on the unforgiving streets of Helveel. Unbeknown to Lusam, the only thing keeping him alive is a promise he made to his grandmother to always hide his aura, no matter what. Lusam meets and befriends a young thief fleeing her old city of Stelgad before making a magical discovery that will change both their lives forever, and possibly the fate of the entire world.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Not bad...
Where does Lusam rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I enjoyed the story, but the Lusam's relationship with Nina feels rushed and forced down my throat.

Should’ve been one book
These two books never should have been two books. There’s no distinct story line for each and they’re way too short.

Acceptable for light listening
The world doesn't seem as well constructed as other books such as The Wheel of Time and the Storm Light Chronicles and the characters seem a little flat at times but all in all it is an enjoyable listen. Just wish there was more "meat" from the story to sink my teeth into.

Good story.
Kept the kids quite in a long car ride. Not a complex story but characters are likeable.

Comfort Reading
This book, and series, at least for me, is what I call comfort reading. While thoroughly enjoyable, it never felt like the main character(s) were never in any real danger of failing. Things always seem to work out just when needed, which I've said before, isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are many books like this that I really enjoy, this being one of them. I loved learning about the world, but it was the power and growing of that power that kind of killed some of the enjoyment for me. It was so general, and when grown was only explained to have doubled, tripled, etc. Unlike many books that have a clear system for magic and its use, this one really focused on making the MC overpowered. Still, it was a solid book, and I enjoyed the entire series.

I almost passed this up!
While looking for books with the same feel of The Inheritance Cycle I passed this book up several times, boy was that a mistake! This book is very well written and not overly complicated like you get with some other fantasy books. This book is a must read if you like The Inheritance Cycle. I don't like comparing books normally but on a scale (of how enveloped in the book I became) this ranks top five for me!
