About this listen

A prequel novella set in the Dominus universe by JP Kenwood.

As a lifelong passion continues to fade, another love deepens...two stand-alone m/m stories of love, lust, and friendship in ancient Rome.

February: Home from the first war against the kingdom of Dacia, Gaius Fabius ignores his obligations in Rome and returns to his secluded seaside villa in Southern Italy. Under the pretense of a holiday trip, his best friend and secret lover, Lucius Petronius, surprises him with an unexpected visit. Later that evening, the lusty masters share the delights of Gaius’s blond pleasure slave, Nicomedes.

December: With whispers of an embezzlement scandal floating through the capital, Lucius Petronius and his beloved concubine, Bryaxis, celebrate the raucous winter solstice festival of the Saturnalia with Luc’s family. After a joy-filled evening of food, gifts, and stories, Lucius and Bryaxis reverse roles in the master chamber.

Warning: Explicit language, filthy loving, and daft shenanigans.

Very engaging

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was nervous to start this book at first. I wasn't sure if the setting would keep me engaged. Mostly because I wasn't sure if there would be antiquated language which would sort of keep me out of the story. So that is the main thing I can point out in my review that I don't think is mentioned otherwise. Although the setting is historical, a lot of the concepts in terms of how the characters relate to each other are translated into basically modern language (and I prefer it this way).

I really enjoyed the first story so much. I felt like there was so much depth and complexity to the relationship between the two main characters. The second story was also good but there is a lot of setup before the payoff. Also I actually really didn't know much about Saturnalia (the backdrop of the second story) so I definitely wasn't expecting some of it.

I would probably listen to the first story quite a few times, but I'm really glad for the second story because I appreciate their contrast and that the main characters in that story got what they needed as well.

Steamy and Festive listen

I enjoyed these two novellas, they are very well written and immersed me into the ancient Roman times. I loved first story so very mush, it has interesting characters, their choices and journey with very steamy times in the middle of their reminiscence. Second story was festive build around celebration of winter solstice and filled with interactions between characters. I loved authors writing, it helped me escape from the stressors of life and into ancient moments in history. Narrator did a good job, he is new to me and it took me few minutes to get used to his voice and narration style. Overall this was a good listening experience.

February and December

I enjoyed this quick glimpse into the ancient world of Rome. The two stories are an engaging listen. They are well written with good characters.
In the first novella Gaius and Lucius get to have a night of debauchery with the help of Nicomedes. In this story we are treated with a look at the complexity of the relationship between these two. The second novella brings listeners into the celebrations of the winter solstice with Lucius and Bryaxis. We get a look at the complexity of Lucius and the roles he must play in his life.
The author weaves a beautiful tale with both stories, pulling this listener into a world full of emotion and depth. Narrator Hannibal Hills does a nice job of bringing the characters and their emotions to life and I was quickly immersed in these stories.

A Beautiful Little Gem in the Dominus Story!

Such a wonderful addition to the Dominus series! And such a beautiful love letter to our dear Lucius. I loved getting a sneak peek into the inner workings of the relationships of both Gaius & Lucius and Lucius & Bryaxis. These two short stories give a much better understanding of both relationships, as well as an endearing picture of Lucius with his daughter and his brother with special needs. We also get a glimpse into the mind of the lovely and precocious Nicomedes in his early days with Gaius. As usual, Hannibal Hills does an extraordinary job with the narration. He’s always so impassioned in his performance of the story, and shows incredible range with the different characters’ voices. Overall, I simply adored this novella and highly recommend it to fans of the series!

loved it

I loved this book. Hannibal Hills' voice really brings these stories to life. The characters and stories are amazing. Two amazing short stories follow characters from the Dominus series.
