About this listen

A recent college graduate from Georgia is hired as a greenhorn on the fishing vessel Lost Agnes in the Bering Sea. A closeted gay deckhand recognizes that the greenhorn is also gay. Despite the deckhand's fierce need to keep his secret, their mutual attraction drives their sexual relationship behind closed doors. But they're in close quarters on the boat.

Unfortunately, the greenhorn doesn't readily adapt to the world of the Bering Sea, forcing the deckhand to make a tough decision.

a nice short read

This is straight forward kind of story, college graduate gay man wanting to prove his masculinity joins a crab fishing boat. In the crowded ship, where homophobic remarks are part of every almost sentence he needs to keep his sexuality a secret. Artie, an older, more experience sailor recognizes Carson’s sexual orientation, as he is also secretly gay and tries to help him learn the job and keep him safe. The sea is a dangerous place and when Carson in injured Artie faces the depth of his feelings for the young man.

I think I liked the second half better than the first, it was more romantic and balanced. It was nice all in all, but very fast paced, I would have liked more time to understand how they got to falling in love. It was such a short read that maybe less events would have made it more cohesive and balanced. It felt like a story too big for the time it had. The audio narration was good, a little fast at first, but with good range of emotion.
