About this listen

Emma Chase, New York Times best-selling author of the Tangled series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs series!

A Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don't call him the Jury Charmer for nothing - with his Southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he's a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross-examined by him.

Stanton's a man with a plan. And for a while life is going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved 10-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married - to someone who isn't him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn't have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits", begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she's crazy... and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

Stanton is giving Drew a run for his money...

Would you listen to Overruled again? Why?

Absolutely! I was super excited when I heard there would be a new series and Emma Chase didn't disappoint. Stanton Shaw has capture my heart and is snuggled right up up there with Mr. Drew Evans..

What was one of the most memorable moments of Overruled?

I loved the entire plot but I have to say that I actually grinned wide when Drew Evans came into the room, almost like I could see him, and I waited in anticipation for Sebastian York to speak for a brief second.

Have you listened to any of Jason Carpenter and Charlotte Penfield ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, they are very well matched and I love their voices.

Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and hearing about Jake and Brent!!

Cute down-to-earth story

I liked this cute story. Emma Chase provided a story that wasn't totally predictable. The excitement was amazing. The characters didn't always do what you would expect. It was nice to see a country boy turn into a powerful, sexy, city man. Enjoyed this light-hearted romance.

PHENOMENAL WRITING !!!!

I almost didn't listen to this and/or Sustained due to all the negative reviews. But, after all these years of using Audible for housecleaning, gardening, and traveling, I've learned that if I am familiar with an author and have enjoyed his/her books in the past, then it behooves me to have faith in that author and find out for myself. So glad I did.

Yes, Stanton came off as a "dick", but I could see how living a 1,000 miles away from his "childhood" sweetheart even though they shared a child and only Skyped and talked on the phone, then when he did go "home" he got to be welcomed back into the old groove that he left and thought he shut his heart off from all other women, that he would believe he was still in love with the person and had no idea until Sofia came along and things got "real" that he realized he was in love with the past. To this listener it was like he stepped back in time when he went back to Sunshine, Mississippi, back into his youth, his football hero years, and back to his girl. Nothing changed. He lived in two worlds. I got it. Well, enough about that.

I want to commend the author for her writing; for her use of words and descriptions. The writing was thoughtful, strong, portrayed the feelings each person was experiencing and had pull that placed me in each situation.

The narration was fantastic. Jason Carpenter has that slow, slight southern drawl and when he spoke I could only imagine that butter wouldn't melt in that mouth but that mouth could definitely melt other things. Charlotte Penfield was also good and I am so glad that man narrated the man's voice and a woman the women's. I loved this book, contrary to what other said. The only reason it did not get 5 stars is that there has only been two out of two hundred books that warrant and have earned that rating. This only & Sustained came close.

Indecisive

Stanton is a good Ol'boy from Mississippi, falls for his high school sweetheart and then the"un-planned"happens...yep,they get pregnant.Jenny tells Stanton to keep his dreams of becoming a big shot attorney, come home when he can, they'll have an open relationship while away from eachother, but stay true when they are together.Sounds like a recipe for destruction.Stanton gets the big city, hot shot lawyer bug and never returns back home to Mississippi, only for visits,he(delusional guy that he is)thinks he can have all the women while he's away while Jenny maintains her heart strictly for Stanton.Wake up call Stanton,Jenny has needs, and not when it's convenient for him to come home. She has emotional needs,a feeling of security and stability for both her and their daughter. She falls in love,Stanton, the Neanderthaul he can sometimes be,decides to change her mind,by(get this)using his current "friend with benefits "to help him discourage Jenny from marrying the other man,not accounting for the possibility of hurting Sophias own feelings and breaking her heart.Low and behold though, lightning,or in this case a Tornado strikes shaking some sense into Stanton, letting him see, what's been in front of his face all along,he had also moved on...sure he and Jenny will always have love for eachother, they have a child together, but now,he not only has a selfless friend who loved him enough to let him go,so he can be happy, but a kick a$$ partner in their firm. All ends happily which is always a good thing.

Hard to believe story

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes. The "hero" lawyer was likable at times and more frequently unlikable with his cynical view of the court system and juries. His overwhelming dislike of his distant girlfriend's groom to be shows his lack of understanding of his girlfriend's frustration with his abscence from her life and child. The sex scenes were right out of "50 shades of Grey". with their explicitness.Young adults may enjoy this novel. I couldn't finish it.

If you’ve listened to books by Emma Chase before, how does this one compare?

NA

Which scene was your favorite?

The lawyer's initial meeting with his girlfriend's groom to be, when the latter turns out to be very likable.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

Some realism.

Any additional comments?

I understand this author's popularity with readers. I wish her well with her future writings. She has real talent and uses her vocabulary wisely - not too wordy and not too brief.

Weak Storyline

There was so much potential for this book. The characters were somewhat developed, but the storyline was slow and weak. Unlike some of the other reviews, I thought the narrators were the best thing about this book. I hope the others in the series are better.

Completely unexpected Romance

In the romance genre, there ia usually a cookie cutter recipe. Girl likes guy, conflict, guy realizes he likes girl, resolution, happily ever after. However I think Emma Chase proved with her Tangled series that she is willing to off the beaten path. "Overruled" was a dynamic I can honestly say I hadn't read before. Not to spoil it- but this is not the relationship you usually root for. At times you wanted to scold the characters for being so stupid (where is your self-preservation Sophia?!) and other times you were left thinking this story is probably more like how life actually happens. Narrator Jason Carpenter did a southern drawl perfectly.

However I do wish there was more time spent developing the bond between the couple before the went to Mississippi to make it more believable that Sophia went with him. I'll read (read: listen to) everything Emma Chase writes and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Better than I thought it would be

I read a few reviews that made we pass this series by and I regret that because it was great
