About this listen

Emma Chase, New York Times best-selling author of the Tangled series, returns with the first installment of the Legal Briefs series!

A Washington, DC, defense attorney, Stanton Shaw keeps his head cool, his questions sharp, and his arguments irrefutable. They don't call him the Jury Charmer for nothing - with his Southern drawl, disarming smile, and captivating green eyes, he's a hard man to say no to. Men want to be him, and women want to be thoroughly cross-examined by him.

Stanton's a man with a plan. And for a while life is going according to that plan.

Until the day he receives an invitation to the wedding of his high school sweetheart, the mother of his beloved 10-year-old daughter. Jenny is getting married - to someone who isn't him.

That's definitely not part of the plan.

Sofia Santos is a city-raised, no-nonsense litigator who plans to become the most revered criminal defense attorney in the country. She doesn't have time for relationships or distractions.

But when Stanton, her "friend with mind-blowing benefits", begs her for help, she finds herself out of her element, out of her depth, and obviously out of her mind. Because she agrees to go with him to The-Middle-of-Nowhere, Mississippi, to do all she can to help Stanton win back the woman he loves. Her head tells her she's crazy... and her heart says something else entirely.

What happens when you mix a one-stop-light town, two professional arguers, a homecoming queen, four big brothers, some Jimmy Dean sausage, and a gun-toting Nana?

The Bourbon flows, passions rise, and even the best-laid plans get overruled by the desires of the heart.

Completely unexpected Romance

In the romance genre, there ia usually a cookie cutter recipe. Girl likes guy, conflict, guy realizes he likes girl, resolution, happily ever after. However I think Emma Chase proved with her Tangled series that she is willing to off the beaten path. "Overruled" was a dynamic I can honestly say I hadn't read before. Not to spoil it- but this is not the relationship you usually root for. At times you wanted to scold the characters for being so stupid (where is your self-preservation Sophia?!) and other times you were left thinking this story is probably more like how life actually happens. Narrator Jason Carpenter did a southern drawl perfectly.

However I do wish there was more time spent developing the bond between the couple before the went to Mississippi to make it more believable that Sophia went with him. I'll read (read: listen to) everything Emma Chase writes and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

At the end when Stanton takes Sofia to the Elton John concert and he sings to her during Your Song.

They both did an excellent job! Loved them both!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Stanton finally realized that Sofia was the one he loved.

If you liked Twisted, you'll like Overruled

Emma Chase does it again. Strong female character. Great writing from the male perspective. Plausible story line. Jason Carpenter is a great narrator. Unfortunately he sounds so much like Matthew McConaughey that I kept picturing him as Stanton. And, unfortunately, that was not a good thing. Sadly, Charlotte read Sofia. And I mean literally, flat reading, no inflection, like listening to CSPAN. So that part was difficult.

The story is sweet and real and modern. It's a fun read over all and I'm looking forward to the next two books very much.

I object

This book should be titled 50 Shades of Grey junior . Lots of steamy scenes

Funny!

** spoiler alert ** This will likely be the oddest review I've ever written. Just stick with me, I promise I'm not crazy.
So here we go.... Sophia Santos and Stanton Shaw are two defense attorneys working in Washington D.C. They are partners and friends. We learn very quickly that they are also engaging in a friends with benefits relationship. That little nugget of information through me for a loop because the book opens with Stanton being in love with his high school sweetheart Jenny. He continues to pursue Jenny throughout the book with Sophia's help.
So here's what I didn't like: The storyline and the main characters. LOL Yep, I'm serious. I just couldn't wrap my head around the fact that a beautiful, smart, well-educated woman would allow herself to be used the way Stanton uses Sophia. On the flip side, how could a smart, educated man not see what was in front of him the entire time? I'm still shaking my head and asking myself, "Seriously?"
Now here's the kicker, I actually enjoyed the book on a basic level. The writing is smart and funny. The secondary characters are funny as hell. There's a gun toting Nana, horny younger siblings, and a nudist brother who grows pot. The cast of characters were totally cray-cray and I loved them all. I also particularly enjoyed the small town feel and descriptions. I grew up in a small town so the nostalgic feeling I had also added to my enjoyment.
Overall, this book is entertaining and well-written. It's definitely not for everyone, so if OW/OM bother you...avoid this one.
Audiobook review: The audible version is narrated by Jason Carpenter and Charlotte Penfield. They both did a great job narrating this story. I really enjoyed the audio version. I would recommend it these narrators to others.
I rate it: 3 Stars

Not what I expected

I love Emma Chase. I didn't love this book. It had the most unrealistic plot ever. I did end up liking it. I was very glad it was on sale. I believe in Emma and her books, so I just downloaded the 2nd in this series.

Took me a while to get into ......

I have listened to several Emma Chase books and thus far I have liked them all. This one took me a bit to get into. I was teetering on not listening all the way through, but had already purchased the entire series. I finally got into it about 3/4 of the way through. I am very glad that I did finish. I ended up liking the story, but LOVED the rest of the series. I think the thing I loved most about the entire series is that these were not simple "copy/paste" books. Each book in the series had a very different story. If your on the ledge about this book, do yourself a favor and go for it so you can listen to the rest. You wont be disappointed.

I liked Jason Carpenters southern drawl for this book, but at times I felt like he just spoke too slow. I think Charlotte did a wonderful job.

Stanton is giving Drew a run for his money...

Would you listen to Overruled again? Why?

Absolutely! I was super excited when I heard there would be a new series and Emma Chase didn't disappoint. Stanton Shaw has capture my heart and is snuggled right up up there with Mr. Drew Evans..

What was one of the most memorable moments of Overruled?

I loved the entire plot but I have to say that I actually grinned wide when Drew Evans came into the room, almost like I could see him, and I waited in anticipation for Sebastian York to speak for a brief second.

Have you listened to any of Jason Carpenter and Charlotte Penfield ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, they are very well matched and I love their voices.

Any additional comments?

I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and hearing about Jake and Brent!!

Cute down-to-earth story

I liked this cute story. Emma Chase provided a story that wasn't totally predictable. The excitement was amazing. The characters didn't always do what you would expect. It was nice to see a country boy turn into a powerful, sexy, city man. Enjoyed this light-hearted romance.
