About this listen

While investigating a suspicious death, private-inquiry agent Ambrose Wells finds himself on the grounds of Aldwick Castle - and in the midst of utter chaos. The ramshackle castle is in flames - and a beautiful woman and four young girls are taking flight on horseback. It turns out that the strong-minded Miss Concordia Glade and her four bright students are on the run from a notorious London crime lord who'll stop at nothing to destroy them. Now their only hope is Ambrose, a confirmed loner with more than his share of secrets - and more than his share of desire for the unconventional teacher. And as Ambrose and Concordia risk everything to bring down a criminal mastermind, they will also be forced to battle something even greater: the steamy passion that threatens their hard-won independence....

Great Plot and Interesting Characters

Amanda Quick has outdone herself with this book. The plot turns a bunch of right angles just as you think you know how it will all go. Her new heroine is plucky and just what you want of a Quick character. The hero meets all of our requirements and each back story is interesting. Heartily recommended.

Wonderful Story

Another great story from Amanda Quick. Very entertaining and witty. I was fast-paced but still you understood the layout of the book.

What fun!

How enlightening the clear delineation of treatment of women and children of poverty ! Too bad this could not have been a solution for more. But, admire the treatise thinking of Amanda Quick in her story.

Nearly perfect

I absolutely adore Ambrose. He dashing, roguish, heroic, and hilarious. His insistence that he’d been “ravished” by Concordia and that he was in danger of being “compromised” made me laugh. It was a refreshing twist on the stereotypical romance and I loved it! The book itself was perfect in every way in my opinion. The narration was nearly as perfect as the book. This narrator is highly talented with voices - both male and female. There were occasional fluency issues with the pausing and emphasis on words sometimes not handled correctly. The amazing talent made up for any of those weaknesses, though.
All in all I highly enjoyed and recommend this audiobook.

Another good one

I love these stories. They combine romance with mystery. I don't care for most plan romances but these add humor and mystery into the story making them much more interesting.

Good story terrible narrator

Good, positive, forward moving story. Great ending. Terrible narrator. Gave me a headache. Male voices constantly spoke with exclamation marks.

Good Balance

This is a delightful story, in spite of being based on a truly dark time for the poor and unprotected children of the Victorian era. These particular orphans and their teacher manage to turn glittering Society and its dark counterpart on its head.

The teacher, Concordia, is in the mold of the best of Amanda Quick's characters. She is smart, quirky, and cheerfully keeps moving forward no matter how badly her plans go.

The narrator reads most of her characters with a shrill voice. Nevertheless the listener has no trouble knowing who is speaking.

Even though this book has been in print/audio for a good while, it is still fresh and compelling.
