About this listen

"It's hard enough with two people. Throwing a third into the mix is...I don't know, doesn't it seem like we're asking for trouble?" It hasn't been easy, but horse trainer Dan Wheeler is beginning to build a new life for himself, finding his place in California with his lovers Evan Kaminski and Jeff Stevens. When things are going well, it's spectacular: there's affection, humor, and passion. But things don't seem to go well all that often. Dan continues to struggle with the loss of his previous lover and sometimes doubts that he even deserves to be happy; Evan is jealous of every rival for Dan's attention - including Jeff; and Jeff worries that he's too old for the younger men and wonders if he should bow out completely. Despite his resolutions, Dan has grown attached to the other two men, but he's not sure that's enough. He knows that it hurts to be together - he needs to decide whether it would hurt even more to be apart.

Great story frustrating characters

If you could sum up Out of the Darkness in three words, what would they be?

Frustrating, Frustrating Characters

What did you like best about this story?

I love the setting with the horses, love the characters, except I wanted to slap Dan and Evan, Especially Dan!

What about Peter B. Brooke’s performance did you like?

This series was my first time with his narrations. I think he did a great job with the character variations

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Ugg, probably every make up time with Evan and Dan especially after the accident.

Enjoyable but some issues

The narration of this audio is excellent. I’d love to hear more audios narrated by Peter B. Brooke. My issue with these guys is for adults, they are incredibly immature particularly Evan. Actually, it’s pretty annoying, round and round they go with jealousy, overprotectiveness, and being territorial. Jeff is a good guy and frankly he seems like the father figure in the arrangement. I hope they clear their issues up which I suspect they will in the next book.

Great story, Love, Life, complications

Would you consider the audio edition of Out of the Darkness to be better than the print version?

Didn't see the printed version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I Loved all three of the main characters. With all the different things that they brought to the story. They all complimented the story great. Author did a great job on making this more than just a book about men laying with each other. They may have more problems, especially with the public view, but they do have the same problems as though a man and women have. I is good to bring all information in to every relationship as you possible can, and having a different view of what else can be done is why I listen to these kind of stories.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Three is not a crowd.
Life is greater than just two.
Love can go further than just two.

Any additional comments?

Naration- the reader is the most important part in the audio world. If the reader reads it wrong or can't make his or her voice different for each character you might as well be reading the book yourself. Love the audio books, leaves my hands free to do other things.
Peter B. Brooke did excellent with his reading and look forward to hearing more from him.

Great 2nd book

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if they read the 1st book. This book picks right up where the 1st one ends. Also, the narrator is excellent.

What other book might you compare Out of the Darkness to and why?

I don't read many m/m/m books, so don't have any to compare. But this is basically a book about relationships in all their complicated glory. There is a lot of fighting between Dan and Evan in this book and a lot of miscommunications. There were many times during the listening of this book when I just wanted them to break up and be done with it. But the author does a good job at not making anyone the "bad guy" They are all to blame to some extent for the conflict. It's just like life.

What does Peter B. Brooke bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The narrator does a fantastic job of giving a realistic voice to each character and projecting their personalities. They are all flawed in some way, but all very lovable at the same time. Although I really didn't like his female voices; way to high and whiny at times. There are many witty and funny moments in this series (usually involving Evan) and the narrator does a great job with those.

If you could take any character from Out of the Darkness out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Dan so I could slap him up against his head and say "stop it"!! He continues to overthink everything and feel he is not good enough. I think that is why I love this series. I am really engaged in the various characters and their lives and really want it to work out for them.

Any additional comments?

I write this review having read the 3rd book and I can say the 3rd is my favorite. This book is necessary to really appreciate the commitment these men have to each other. It is frustrating sometimes, but worth it in the end. Even though I have read the 3rd book, I'd still buy it on Audible if it had the same narrator. This one is definitely worth a credit.

Probably my favorite series

I probably read these every year or so and thought I'd take a listen this time. Dark Horse and Out of the Darkness have not disappointed.
And, my gosh...the endings of all three books are excellent , but the epilog of Out of the Darkness gives you the BEST in emotions.

Great follow up

What made the experience of listening to Out of the Darkness the most enjoyable?

The narrator is superb for this one. His hits the various characters emotions with just the right tone. This book is my favorite of this series as the three try to build their relationship together despite the various problems that each of them have.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Out of the Darkness?

I love the first sex scene where Dan takes charge and Jeff ends up in the middle. Lots of dirty talk and hot action. Also the fight between Evan and Dan when Tyler first enters the picture. Dan really exposes himself there and Jeff cuddling him afterwards in heartwarming.

What about Peter B. Brooke’s performance did you like?

He really captures the emotions of the characters. Each character has a distinctive voice and each one fits the characters perfectly.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end with Dan and the orange where he really wants the the relationship and admits it.

Any additional comments?

I'm predisposed to like this book since it is my favorite out of the series. The narrator does a great job on it.

Immensely enjoyable

Have to say, I enjoyed book 2 even more than book 1. I took a break after the first one instead of immediately getting book 2 but I found myself thinking of horses and these 3 guys even with while listening to other books. So I gave in and got it and I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The author is so funny so often and I find I am bursting into loud laughter. I like that it is a long story, you have time to absorb the background and it is never dull or boring, although the behavior of Dan and Evan at times is annoying and frustrating. Highly recommend, and I am about to listen to book 3.

Book 2, just as good as Book 1

This book picks up the plot directly after book one. The threesome is still new and the boys test it's boundaries and rules in this next instalment. Chris' character features a lot more in this book, and to be honest, the plot twist I'd been hoping for, never materialised.
An ex hookup of Dan's strains the relationship and the on off on off cycle continues.

Now for my plot twist:
Seeing we're in the fantasy realm of billionaire / artist / horseman happy triad, wouldn't it be interesting if Chris, Dan's best mate ever, moves to LA and professes his love for Dan? A bit twee, I grant you, but that's what a fantasy plot twist is all about.
