About this listen

Curiosity can be a dangerous thing. In Abigail Watson's case, it nearly ended her life. After a brush with death, Abigail is reminded of just how short life can be... then she meets Jack Landon, the mysterious heir to the Landon fortune and her savior from a certain death. Jack's tastes are very defined, and his ability to seduce with ease draws Abigail into his dark world. One taste of him on her lips and she is consumed with a desire, a willingness to submit and let him take the gift that she has protected for so long.

LilyElement Book Reviews - The Devil's Gate

Any additional comments?

Abigail Watson is a student that is finishing up her last year of college. Once complete, she'll be able to pursue her marketing career. Abby has been focused on her education, and has never really found the right guy for her, so our leading lady is a virgin. The book starts with Abby at a coffee shop one afternoon and a drop dead gorgeous guy walks in and gets her all flustered. When she leaves she steps off a curb and almost gets hit by a bus. Yep, she almost dies and he comes her to rescue. The hottie then offers to have her attend a dinner with him at his house.

Jack Landon, the hottie that saved Abigail's life, is a filthy rich, jerk that is used to getting what he wants. He has a BDSM kink, and mainly likes to inflict pain that has some pleasure mixed in. I normally have a love/hate relationship with the jerk male leads, but this one was just a miss for me. I couldn't love Jack's character, which was unfortunate.

Some things in the story just seemed to fall in place a bit too easily. I like my leading ladies to work for it. Abby has this fancy dinner to attend at Jack's house and needs a fancy dress? Oh, no worries! The roommate she's had for a few years suddenly tells her that she comes from a rich family and has all these fancy dresses and jewelry.

The other big issue I had was the characters in The Devil's Gate had me so confused with the drastic mood changes going on. Jack and Abigail would be on a date and enjoying themselves and something went slightly wrong and Jack turned into pure ice and then she wouldn't hear from him for months. Seriously, one of those was a 3 month wait. She would pine for him and after thinking about him non-stop for those months, she'd break down and go see him finally and things would be fine again. After the first few times of doing that wouldn't she learn to give it a few days then go make up?

I personally wasn't able to connect with this book, but so many others were able to. So don't listen to me, read this if you want to and you can tell me if you enjoyed it! I suggest this book if you want a book with a rich guy who likes to be in control.

Narrator:
I have to admit the best part of the audiobook was the narrator. I enjoyed her voice for most of the characters. I didn't care for the main character's voice initially, it had a touch too much of an innocent nerdy girl vibe. Which is no fault of the narrator, that did fit the character. It grew on me as the story progressed though and I wound up enjoying that aspect. I would definitely try more audiobooks narrated by Sierra Kline.

predictable and corny!

I love smutty books but if felt like this one was trying too hard to be like "fifty shades" it was corny and predictable! I wouldn't read it again or recommend it to friends. I felt that the performance portrays the main character as too child like. she had her voice very high and whiny!

Intense and spell binding

From the moment I started this journey and yes that is truly what it is I knew that it would be a daunting one but one that simply must be underwent in order to embrace and understand what is wanted from each of the characters. There is laughter, tears, pain and hatred but understanding comes with it all its everything a great book should be. I look forward to the next book!

Not what I was expecting

I feel like there should be a warning on this book. I didn't look up the author beforehand but if I had I would have had a better idea of the type of book I was getting myself into. Trigger warning! There's blood, and cutting. After the second time I thought to myself that I didn't think I could listen to the rest but it eased up a little and didn't escalate. The story is different and unexpected which is always a good thing in my book. I was definitely hooked for book 2 after the cliffhanger.

The narrator was good except for two things: the childlike voice she uses for Abigail (not all the time but enough to mention) and how sometimes her 's' can hit a bad pitch on the recording. The last one might be her and rather just the recording studio, however I've noticed it in another book she read as well.

Sexy, Sensual, Sizzling hot!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes of course. Anytime I find a great read I want my friends to enjoy it as well.

What did you like best about this story?

. That Happiness is not always a bed of roses.

What about Sierra Kline’s performance did you like?

She nailed it! She became and is Abigail Watson's.

Any additional comments?

There is something different about this handsome sexy and mysterious man. Something that intrigues Abigail. What she doesn't know is once she enters Jack's world there is no turning back.

Dark twisting romance.

If you could sum up The Devil's Gate in three words, what would they be?

Dark twisting romance

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Devil's Gate?

The ending... it really left me mad and hanging.

Have you listened to any of Sierra Kline’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not but she was an amazing narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, sad, angry.

Any additional comments?

Received audio for an honest review.

This book was written very well, I really enjoyed the story line. It is a dark romance (not what I normally read at all, but I really enjoyed this book). Its a love story about your average collage girl trying to get though school, not really looking for any "romance" till an "accident happens, and she is saved by Mr. tall dark and handsome. The journey that they go on trying to love each other because one of them says they are not capable of love,,,,,,

I did not expect the book to end they way it did.... it really pissed me off. LOL

The narrator of the audio copy is amazing she tells the story great and pulls you in right away.

An Unlikely Romance with a Serious Twist

This book started out somewhat slowly- depending on what you're expecting! To me, I was expecting a bit more of an adult fairy tale for some reason. Please don't make that mistake.

The narration is great, with one small exception. There is an odd ongoing issue with the protagonist- she has these moments where she's thinking to herself and the voice turns very squeaky and childlike. (Not in a good way!) It doesn't happen consistently when she's thinking to herself, which I'm very thankful for. It's easy enough to move past.

Just go into this one with an open mind- you will not regret the listen! I really can't say much about the actual storyline without spoilers except that it is most definitely part adult romance with some BDSM and some other, rather unexpected-but very interesting- elements.

If you like like your romance with some depth and intrigue, you'll like it. I'm definitely looking forward to the next part in the series.

Keep the story coming!

*** I was given a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

There is something about a broken man you just want to fix. This story had me transfixed on how to help Jack! In the beginning of the book, I thought that clumsy, easily flustered Abby was going to be your soft, give in to everything kind of woman with Jack leading and teaching her as you go along. As I listened, I was pleasantly surprised by her intuitiveness and strength. Jack, the in control, alpha male has so many layers to his personality, you can't help but fall in love with him. Watching this relationship unfold, and meeting the supporting cast kept me captivated. Jack's family, especially his mother, you love to hate, but also feel that compassion for her when you learn of her past. Jared you want to shake, and Peter..well, you have to read the book to see about Peter.

The narration of this book by Sierra Kline was perfect. She has great flow, a warm rich voice and differentiates between her characters so you know exactly who is speaking. I hope she continues the series.

I cannot wait for book 2...the cliffhanger does exactly what it's meant to...scramble for that next book!

It's so so

I like the book but I noticed lots of similarities been this trilogy and 50 Shades of Grey. Sort of gives the same vibes.
