Story
Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in LA alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.

Ridiculous but worth a read
Reviewed: 01-13-25
I was looking for a smutty read, and I found it. However, the language and sex scenes were so over-the-top and ridiculous, I was laughing through some of it. Like when this polished woman starts talking about her c-word in a non-sexual setting (she just drops it nonchalantly like it’s the most normal thing ever), I was like nobody talks like that. Also, the character development and writing is objectively bad in some places (but it’s also good in other spots). The premise and general plot is good. In short—when it’s bad, it’s really bad, but overall, it was okay. I don’t regret buying it. It’s a short book after all. But just keep your expectations in check.

Story
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

Really good, a little repetitive
Reviewed: 12-19-24
The story arc took forever to develop, but it did eventually. Also, there seemed to be some contradiction in the book. Not saying the author was untruthful but that maybe it wasn’t well explained how a sociopath could be madly in love with her new boyfriend. I didn’t understand. Also, the dialogue (between she and her professor, she and her boyfriend, she and her therapist) was often delivered in huge chunks that were very well thought out. Like these fully formed ideas and incredible insights happened instantaneously. I accept that dialogue is reconstructed when writing memoir, but the way it was written was too clean and unrealistic.
For not having a drama background (to my knowledge), the narration was great, especially the different voices. The text just flowed. However, she laughed at some stories and memories which gave it a vengeful and catty feeling (maybe this tracks with her personality…idk).
I will say that she set out to do what she meant which is help people by sharing her story. I am guilty of throwing around the word sociopath without fully understanding its meaning. It helped me understand what sociopathy is, how it feels, and how little resources exist for sociopaths.
Overall, it’s a great read. I blew through it in two days. It is very INSIGHTFUL (especially when describing the early years).

Story
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work.

Great story—just a couple small complaints
Reviewed: 10-12-24
I really enjoyed this book, but the male narrator’s performance was kind of cringe. He has a great voice, but when he was reading for the female characters, it made me laugh. I think he did the best he could with his deep voice, but the female narration was like a bad impersonation, like a South Park character.
Also, his delivery was often monotone, and he kept doing this thing throughout the entire book where he would punctuate the end his sentences with sighs, like he was exasperated. It was annoying.
As far as the story goes, I thought Justin’s character was clingy.

Stupid characters, good plot
Reviewed: 08-18-24
If the characters weren’t stupid, the plot wouldn’t work. Millie was especially insufferable, and I almost abandoned the book about halfway through for that reason. I’m glad I pushed on because there was a plot twist that made the book worth it. So overall, it’s worth the read if you can ignore the fact that common sense could have unraveled the plot.

Story
Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realized he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Best book in the series!
Reviewed: 06-05-23
I agree with most reviews that the narrator was over-the-top in the more dramatic parts of the story, but this is still worth a read. The story itself is so good—my favorite in the series. Maas’ writing and imagination are awesome. I didn’t want this book to end (and it’s 24 hours long). For those saying it was an excuse for smut, I thought it was just the perfect amount of smut lol. To each their own.
