I really enjoyed this listen! Great story - it was just a little technical for me. I was confused a lot of the time and plan to do a little homework and then listen again.
My only complaint about the narrator is that I absolutely loathe his female voices.. especially Katie. They sound nasally and silly. They just don’t match the personalities of the strong women in the story. I have felt the same way for each book but love the stories so much I just grit my teeth whenever I listen instead of read.
I do hope Jack Carr is not done with James Reece just yet!!

Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

I am happy that several of the mysteries or questions from the first book were answered… A nice relief. I will be counting the minutes until the third book arrives! I like the narrator, and her pace with the book is great. My only criticism would be that she forgets her voicesoccasionally, and I have to go back and relist to understand who is speaking.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

I want to believe there is a James Reese really out there protecting us. My only criticism is the narrator’s female voices… especially Katie’s. These female characters are strong and decisive but the voice makes them sound like silly girls. Wrong cadence and tone. All the male voices are great.

I have enjoyed this series. Originally started listening on recommendation of a news radio host. We as a country are not prepared for this type of attack. The grid should be hardened immediately! Write your representatives!
My only criticism of the book is that the main character is written to have repeatedly gotten lost in nostalgia. Remembering a time when… it got annoying. Otherwise I enjoyed it and will now not sleep at night!

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

The characters, the history.. it’s truly genius the way the family stories moved forward through thousands of years and yet they stayed fluid and clear. I learned so much and enjoyed every minute!
My one small critique of the narrator is that he is awful at female voices. They were either childlike or high pitch whispers. Not good.

This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

This one started out great. A lot of historical and political details. And then became a soap opera romance novel. Ugh... not my favorite.
Narrator was terrific but even he sounded bored by the end.
