About this listen

The highly anticipated follow-up to William R. Forstchen's New York Times best-sellers, One Second After and One Year After, The Final Day immerses listeners once more in the story of our nation's struggle to rebuild itself after an electromagnetic pulse wipes out all electricity and plunges the country into darkness, starvation, and terror.

After defeating the designs of the alleged federal government, John Matherson and his community have returned their attention to restoring the technologies and social order that existed prior to the EMP (Electro-Magnetic Pulse) attack. Then the government announces that it is ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what's left of the US Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states.

The man sent to confront John is General Bob Scales, John's old commanding officer and closest friend from prewar days. Will General Scales follow orders, or might he be the crucial turning point in the quest for an America that is again united? As the dubious Federal government increasingly curtails liberty and trades away sovereignty, it might just get exactly what it fears: revolution.

There are warnings signs in this story, and there not just from a foreign threat which is serious enough. It also contains a much more serious warning of domestic threats. Not all threats are premeditated threats of aggression or subversion. The most consequential are the passive threats of willful ignorance or denial. Those of refusing to recognize and react to personal responsibility and involvement in the shaping of our nation. You will recognize all of these threats here and the latter always proves to be the most consequential in the long run.

Very good story and deliver

This, along with it's prequels are must reads for all. How will you prepare? As for me, plans for just in case needs to be really thought through, because this story isn't one that "hapoens to other countries, not the US".

Really makes you think...

This books spurs the question, "What would I have done if it were me?"

The historic references remind you that however bad it gets for us, others went through similar circumstances.

Places you in the middle of your own home town.

A new Fan

What made the experience of listening to The Final Day the most enjoyable?

Just the continuation of the story

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hard for it not to be John as he was by far the central character

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Bronson Pinchot?

Kevin Pierce or Patrick Freeman

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, just too long.

Any additional comments?

Was very disappointed in the narration. What happened to him between One Year After and this one? I had no problems listening to him in the previous book, although a bit over the top at times with the southern accent. But with this one, the characters didn't sound the same at not. Not just that he didn't use the same voice, but the demeanor one might imagine that was established in the previous book was different. Forrest was the biggest example, his character sounded as if he'd been castrated. But the worst aspect of all was the horrible inflection in his voice when he tried to emphasis. Not only did it sound bad but it was often misplaced. Very difficult to listen to and would probably have given up if I wasn't already so entrenched in the story from the first two books

Great Ending to an Epic Saga

I enjoyed this title and the whole series. I would have liked the epilogue period to have been a couple chapters long and more detailed.

Entertaining Read

Emotional ride if you've become attached to some of the characters. Still not crazy about the narrator, but the story itself is worth putting up with it.

A great ending to a great series.
