Story
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Dull
Reviewed: 12-20-24
Don't get me wrong. I often root for characters that are, shall we say, flawed. I like stories that delve into the human psyche. Dark pasts with hidden or forgotten secrets can be interesting. To this day, I am not positively for sure convinced that I did not kill a classmate in high school and bury the body in the woods. Anyway, I repeatedly dreamed I did. I am still waiting for the body to be found. What I can not forgive is characters that are consistently boring. When I am checking out a movie to watch or looking for a new TV series to follow, if I don't really care about the characters and could really not care less what happens to them, I pass. In the future I will be sure to thoroughly check out individual reviews before buying a book with money. Only a book purchased with one credit is eligible to be returned. I am very grateful for the person who said to adjust the speed to make it bearable. I found that 1.4 was ideal. I didn't have to listen to the women slowly drone on but could still easily understand what was being said. That being said, I did not like this book at any speed.

The first story was The Queen and the foreign accent sounded more like a foreign language to me. I tried to read other stories in the collection but I found them basically disorienting. I returned it the next day and purchased The Heir and The Crown instead.

The narrator's performance is jarring. Often seems incongruous with what is going on or which character is speaking. Sometimes the narrator's voice is too aggressive, harsh and loud (not talking about military voices). I actually do like the voice for the war dog and killer coyote. Weird.

Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

J.D. did a excellent job of vividly describing the community he grew up in. By comparison, my childhood as a lumberjack's daughter in the Idaho Panhandle seems a great blessing.

Throne of Glass: "Queen of Shadows" was so good! Twice I was crying/sobbing tears of joy, relief and excitement. Such great characters, both new and old. Loving and courageous with unfailing loyalty; imperfect, vulnerable, magnificent, determined to make their world a better place.
Postscript: After listening to Empire of Storms I returned it and also returned Tower of Dawn and Kingdom of Ash. Empire of Storms was virtually equal to Rated R in a movie. The characters seemed different. Everything seemed off, like the publisher had told the author to make her stories more edgy and to add graphic sex since the last three books had a total disconnect from the previous books. I totally loved the Throne of Glass series up until that point, including The Assassin's Blade. I told my daughter that Queen of Shadows ended well for going no further.

I almost always fall asleep before walking down the entire staircase. It plays various repetitive, soothing instrumentals. I am glad that the positive affirmations come at the times when I am in deep sleep. In the beginning I tried to play it while awake to actually know what encouragement I was getting and how often I was hearing the positive guidance and affirmations during the night. I just lacked the patience to do that. I know there is speaking around the three hour mark. I am determined to listen to it every night for 28 days to see if my attitude towards life and specifically towards food changes.

This was very cool! It was like I was sitting around a campfire with Dean Koontz himself telling the scary story to entertain the folks listening to his tale under the light of the moon. Clever, witty and fast paced. I love it when Dean throws caution to the wind and just goes for it! Narrator/Actor Ray Chase is giving Ray Porter a run for his money as they are both brilliant!
