Story
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

My name is Mercy Thompson Hauptman, and my mate, Adam, is the werewolf who leads the Columbia Basin Pack, the pack charged with keeping the people who live and work in the Tri-Cities of Washington State safe. It’s a hard job, and it doesn’t leave much room for side quests. Which is why when I needed to travel to Montana to help my brother, I intended to go by myself.

At first I had a hard time following this one. But once I figured out the method I really enjoyed the mystery of it all. I’m REALLY glad they had Lorelei King do all of the narrating instead of having the male voice we’ve had before. I think it wild have ruined it for me. Another great story in the Mercy verse. 💜

This is great! Long time Buffy verse fan. Longer time James Marsters fan. And this is brilliant! I’ve listened to the Dresden files 5x now. (He is such a great narrator) this was just like watching an episode of the old show. Same feel to it. I was happy to see so many of the original characters show up for this. I loved it. I hope they do many many more! Another reason I really like this is, I listen to books like most listen to music and this gives you the feel of watching a tv show while doing laundry or something, but not having to stop and look at a box every 10 seconds so you don’t miss anything.. I appreciate the freedom it gives you. I hope that makes sense. LoL
Anyway, if you haven’t listened yet skip this part ***SPOILER ALERT!!!****
I was just thinking in the very last minute “man too bad Willow didn’t make an appearance” and literally 10 seconds later… Tada! There she is! And do I see a sequel coming??? 😊😊 sure hope so!
Anyway, well done everyone!! Thank you! 💜

Don’t give up!
Reviewed: 07-17-23
I’ve read/listened to this series going on 5x now. And everytime I start over I cringe a little bit in this first book. Of the whole series, this one is the hardest to get thru. HOWEVER… I’m so glad I did. By book 3 Jim really has ironed out the characters and built a wonderful world that I love to live in. And James Marsters is my favorite narrator of all time, but he had to start somewhere! It’s not until book 3 that he really gets it figured out. I wish they would have him redo books 1 & 2. Because he really is a FANTASTIC narrator! But you wouldn’t know it by just this book. I don’t often leave reviews and I listen to audible literally 8+ hours a day. At work, at home, in the shower, in the garden, cooking cleaning etc etc. I just felt like I had to speak about this because those of you that put this series down over the first couple books are missing out on an amazing story. I can’t say enough about how good it is. There’s action, drama, comedy, and unlike many books that have one plot and one main event, every book has so many things going on and lead ins to things many books later that tie together. It’s so well planned out that it blows my mind. And I hate the idea that people give up on it because of the learning curve that Jim and James had starting out. So, that being said, I hope you keep going and don’t give up!
FYI I’m a 41yr old single mom, and no one asked me or paid me to leave this review.

I agree with some others, this book is a bit slower that the other books. However… in its entirety, it’s well worth the read. Plus there’s some important stuff that happens in this book that leads into other books.
As always Lorelei does a fantastic job

I want to start by saying, that I love this series, and I hadn’t expected too. However, I have an hour left of this book and I still don’t even know what it’s about.
Bringing in the second narrator really wasn’t a good idea. I notice that it’s hard for me in any series when they change narrators. But to have 2 in one book that’s been only Lorelei for every other book… This poor guy never stood a chance. Maybe he’s a good narrator for other books. But these characters already HAVE voices. And they’re GREAT voices with so much personality. Lorelei did that.
I found it hard to pay attention to every chapter that he read. So it took me 3x as long to listen to it due to rewinding constantly. Still, I missed things.
As for the story, I can’t say for sure, I’m gonna have to read it I think. But if it’s in line with the previous 8-9 books, (I’ve lost count, I’ve just been eating thru them. They’re so good) then I’m sure it’s a wonderful story. I hope this is the only one like this tho. I will still be getting the next one. I just love these books! ;)

I really like this series. It is a little hard to follow at times just because everything goes by so quick. But I feel like I wouldn’t have had a problem if I had been reading instead of listening. But overall, the basic story line is really great and original. I different take on angels and demons than I’ve seen before. You get attached to the characters and feel all the feels when you’re supposed to. The narrator did an AMAZING job in all 3 books. I really like when they have the same narrator for all the books in a series and they picked a great one for this. It’s a perfect fit for the genre. Can’t wait for the next one, keep up the good work! I’m a huge fan of the Dresden files (by Jim Butcher, narrated by James Marsters) if you are too, I think you will like this series.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Ok, so.. mad props to Jim for doing a pretty good job as the narrator. It isn’t an easy job. Having a different voice for most characters is huge. And I honestly wouldn’t mind listening to him as a narrator… just, not as Dresden. The Dresden characters already have voices. And they’re amazing. James does such an amazing job, I’ve listened to the whole series 5x or more, just because I love the sound of his voice and he puts so much actual acting into the script. So, that being said, the story was good. And I’m glad I spent the credit. But I’m also glad James will be returning for the full length books. If not, I would probably return to reading them so I can hear the voice I’m used to in my head. One final note, I do realize without Jim there would be no Dresden, and so I feel that should be mentioned as well. Thanks Jim and James. You guys are the dynamic duo. I can’t wait for more.
