Story
Lady Theodosia Balfour has certainly gotten the short end of the stick—her stepsister, the newly crowned Princess Beatrice, is telling everyone in polite society that Theo, her sister, and their mother are evil, wicked, and horrid people who treated her like a slave. Though Theo knows this isn't exactly true, it seems her life is thoroughly ruined by the rumor. With the Balfour family estate on the verge of bankruptcy, Theo's only path forward is a forced betrothal to the Duke of Snowbell, a foul-tempered geezer who wishes only to use her as a brood mare for spare heirs.

Story
When an enigmatic message uploaded to the dark web turns out to contain an ancient secret giving regular people the power to do impossible things, like levitate cars or make themselves invisible, American government officials panic. They know the demo videos on YouTube and instructions for incantations could turn from fantastical amusement to dangerous weapon at the drop of the hat, and they scramble to keep the information out of the wrong hands. They tap Ben Zolstra, an ex-CIA field operative whose history with the agency is conflicted at best.

The writing was pedantic. I thought the magic would make it better, but no. It was a tool. The last 5 minutes were decent.

I enjoyed this book! It was easy to listen to, I did not really like the younger narrator’s voice, she made even the sheriff sound like a 16 year old. I new the twist at the end, but that didn’t ruin my experience

Why are there so many 5 star reviews?
Reviewed: 03-21-24
I really enjoyed the prologue, the world building. But Fallon is a poorly written main character and the focus on her virginity is so unnecessary. The author pretends to be progressive but I don’t believe she is; more problematic. The narrators were the only reason I kept listening.

Orphaned. Trained to fight. Raised to fear the power of Underhill. Secretly in love with a man who doesn’t want me. I’m still just Alli, a.k.a. the half-human orphan fae, but my life is looking up for the first time. It only took me my whole 24 years. DNF!

This was a DNF for me. I find the main character to be shallow and annoying. I find all the characters to be cliché and literal tropes. I do not mind cursing in my books, however I found it jarring in this book. I'm not saying I'm representative of everyone here, but listen to the bad reviews. I wish I had done that.

Dramatized Adaptation is so-so

Here is my opinion, based on listening to the Renee Raudman version too many times to count:
The different voices are great! I love Curran's voice, Jim's, and even Kate's. There are a few like Mahon and Aunt B, their voices just don't match their description, but I can overlook those.
What I have a problem with is the background music. It's like they found the cheapest Open Source music and put it in the background. The sound effects didn't bother me very much. However, the music takes me out of the book so many times I can barely stay in it.
I've got all of the previous version's books with Renee, and I'm not sure I will buy the subsequent books. I hope they fix the music issues, because I would love to continue to collect them.

Horrible Narration

This has horrible narration. That would be bad enough but I find the main character’s attitude to be obnoxious. If they had found a different narrator for the other books I might have continued. Please quit casting American narrators in British books…from an American.
